Gary Allan Hickman, age 83, of Westerville, Ohio, passed away suddenly on April 4, 2026. Gary was born on May 28, 1942, in Columbus, Ohio, to the late Allan Clair Hickman and the late Bertha Marie Osborn.
Gary lived a full and vibrant life defined by hard work, devotion to family, and an unwavering spirit of self-reliance. He was a true outdoorsman who found peace and purpose in the natural world. An avid hunter, he had a particular love for deer and raccoon hunting, and he passed that appreciation on to those closest to him—especially his sons and his grandson, Troy (Bubbers).
His passion for NASCAR and the Winston Cup Series was well known to all who loved him. A devoted fan of Dale Earnhardt Sr. and Dale Earnhardt Jr., Gary treasured attending races at Bristol Motor Speedway and Columbus Motor Speedway, where the thunder of engines and the thrill of competition brought him great joy.
A gifted and resourceful man, Gary was a DIY expert long before the age of online tutorials. He loved working on his own cars and tackling projects with his own two hands, never one to shy away from a challenge.
More than anything, Gary’s greatest passion was his family. Known lovingly as “Pappy,” he dedicated himself to spending quality time with his sons and daughter, teaching them invaluable lessons about life, responsibility, and perseverance as they grew into adulthood. His guidance, humor, and steady presence shaped the lives of everyone fortunate enough to call him family.
Gary was preceded in death by his beloved wife, Nellie; his son, Rod Hickman; his brother, Bruce Hickman; his sister, Barbara Stefanek; and his parents.
He is survived by his sons, Rick Hickman (Sherri) and Mike Hickman (JoEllen); his daughter, Tina Oliver (Jeff); and several cherished family members, including Kristin, Reanna (Tyler), Nicholas, Mary Elyse, Troy, Charlie, Amanda, Michael, Brandy, and eleven great-grandchildren.
Gary also leaves behind a wide circle of friends and loved ones whose lives were made richer by knowing him.
Memorial services will be announced in the coming days. The family asks that all who knew Gary remember him for the love and laughter he brought into the world. His warmth, wit, and generous heart will not be forgotten.
Memorial services will be held on Tuesday, April 14th at 2pm at the Blendon Central Cemetery located at 6330 S Hempstead Rd, Westerville, OH 43081.
