John Michael (Mike) Kearney, 79, of New Albany, OH, and Pinehurst, NC, passed away on August 30, 2024, surrounded by his family. Mike was preceded in death by his parents, John F. Kearney and Cleo (nee Frisbee) Kearney Wolcott, of Eldred, PA, and Oneida, NY, and his stepfather, Edwin Wolcott of Eldred, PA. He is survived by his wife Kathleen (Kate) Rigg, his son Sean Kearney (Shari), his daughter Megan Ratchford (Tom LeBeau), his grandson Ryan Ratchford, his granddaughter Avery LeBeau and several step-grandchildren and great-grandchildren. He is also survived by his four siblings: Martin Kearney (Charlene), Hammond, LA; Patrick Kearney, Durham, NC; Paul Kearney, Oneida, NY; and Mary Ann Kearney-Danboise (Ty), Messina, NY.
Mike grew up in Eldred, PA, graduated from Otto-Eldred High School in 1962, attended Bradley University, received his bachelor’s degree in business from Morehead State University and his MBA from University of Dayton. He is also a graduate of the ABA Stonier Graduate School of Banking. After studying computer programming at Wright-Patterson AFB, Mike’s career path took him into IT management and consulting, and then eventually to National City Bank (later PNC), where he switched career paths and moved into corporate management. He retired in 2006 as SVP of Properties Management within the Finance Division. Complementing his professional life was his dedication to helping others. Thus, Mike volunteered much time in support of The Breathing Association, serving on its Board for several years.
Mike was an avid runner, golfer and hiker and often combined those interests with his love for travel. He was also passionate about his Porsches, owning several throughout the years. In his less active years, Mike enjoyed following all sports on TV, but primarily golf, basketball and college football. He also ardently supported his son’s favorite pro baseball and football teams; together they made several trips to AZ to watch the Cubs’ spring training sessions. And of course, any family get-togethers highlighted all of his activities.
A memorial service for Mike will be held at The Church of the Resurrection, 6300 E. Dublin Granville Rd., New Albany, OH, at 11:00 AM on Friday, Sept. 6th, with a reception to follow.
In lieu of flowers, donations can be made to The Breathing Association, The Church of the Resurrection or your favorite local animal shelter or humane society.
