Nancy Wilson Poklar lost her long and courageous battle with Lewy body dementia on October 2 at age 82. Nancy was a wife of 57 years to Allan, mom to Eric and Adam (wife Abby), Nana to Anna, Griffin, Cora and Hattie, and sister to Sue, all of whom are mourning her loss.
Nancy loved her family more than anything else. And her family loved her back just as much. She was born in Akron, Ohio in 1940 to Lee and Jessie Wilson, both of whom have previously passed. She attended Ellet High School and received her bachelor’s degree in education from Bowling Green State University where she was a proud member of the Alpha Delta Pi sorority. She worked for 30+ years as a speech therapist, serving students in several Cleveland/Euclid-area schools and lived most of her adult life in Beachwood, Ohio, before moving to Columbus in 2015 to be closer to her family.
Nancy was ahead of her time. She was a feminist before feminism was cool. She was into fitness before that was cool, too, running and/or swimming almost every day while her sons sat poolside watching her proudly. But mostly, she was a mom who worked full time, never missed a ballgame, made dinner every night and kept her household running like a top. Understandably, one of her favorite activities was a good nap. She was also passionate about animals (including her three cats), camping, music and sports, in particular the Cleveland Guardians (nee Indians) and Ohio State Buckeyes.
Nancy will be laid to rest in a private ceremony for her immediate family. On Saturday, October 15, from 1-4 pm, her family will host an open house in Worthington, Ohio for friends and family to remember her and celebrate a life well lived. All are welcome.
