Dr. Paul Nathan Kaufman, devoted husband, wonderful father and brilliant, visionary physician was welcomed into the gates of Heaven and into the arms of Jesus on December 19, 2025 with his family by his side.
Paul was born on Mother’s Day on May 14, 1961 in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania, as the youngest of four children to William and Helen Kaufman. He briefly lived in Arizona as a toddler but was raised most of his life in Detroit. He was a 1979 Independence High School graduate in Southfield, Michigan. He attended Michigan State University as an undergraduate and Wayne State College of Medicine, graduating in 1986. His choice of urologic surgery led him to the University of Cincinnati for a six year residency. It was there that he met his future wife and love of his life,Theresa (Neal) Kaufman, whom he married in 1992 in Cincinnati, Ohio.
Paul had practices in Kalamazoo, Michigan, Austin, Texas, and eventually Columbus, Ohio at Buckeye Urology. Through his keen insight and vision for the changes in medical practices, he formed a multi-practice merger of 26 urology physicians into what is now Central Ohio Urology Group. He was their first president serving from 2012-2015. He truly thrived as a physician. Paul loved his patients and enjoyed his work with his colleagues. In June 2025, after retirement due to his illness, the City of Gahanna renamed the Central Ohio Urology building that he built at 701 Tech Center the Paul N. Kaufman Center Of Urologic Excellence.
Paul was an avid Michigan State fan and a true Spartan. His favorite color was green and he wore it proudly. Paul and Tess enjoyed traveling and were fortunate to see Thailand, numerous countries in Europe, and Paul spent extensive time in Israel as a young man. He also loved working in his yard, gardening and having a yearly vegetable garden. He soon discovered the deer in New Albany loved it, too.
Most importantly, Paul was the proud father of 3 daughters, Madeline Kaufman Sullivan (Shane) of NYC and Nashville, Lily Kaufman (Kyle Weisman), and Adelaide Kaufman of Columbus, Ohio. He was the perfect girl dad and supported all three in whatever they were involved in. He made a special effort to be at all dance recitals, sporting events and celebrations, rarely missing one. Paul loved quizzing his daughters about the capitals of countries throughout the world, and correcting their Spanish pronunciations.
With his wide knowledge of almost anything, he was encouraged to apply as a contestant on Jeopardy, but he humbly declined the compliment. His three dogs over his life also gave him a love of animals nurturing and raising Otis, Ruby and Hazel from puppyhood. Walking his dogs in the evenings gave him time to relax and admire nature.
Born and raised Jewish, Paul gave his life to Jesus Christ in 2009. His faith never wavered during his long illness with Parkinson’s Disease and later Lewy Body Dementia. He faced his diagnosis with courage, faith and grace, never complaining. He participated bravely in two clinical trials at Ohio State University to further the knowledge of these diseases in hopes of finding a cure for others.
The family would like to thank his private caregivers Carol Bronsdon and Jeff Parkins who gave Paul love and care at home beyond measure. We also want to thank his colleagues, friends and family who supported us for such a long time. We are forever grateful to Paul’s brother, Dr. Stuart Kaufman, who moved to Ohio after his retirement to help Paul in his last years.
The Cotter House in Worthington, Ohio and National Church Residences Hospice were his angels giving him kind and loving care until the end. They all loved calling him “Doc.”
Donations can be made in Paul’s honor to the Lewy Body Dementia Association or the Parkinson’s Foundation.
A Service will be held at Grace Fellowship Church, Jefferson Campus at 3600 Waggoner Rd, Blacklick OH 43004 on December 26th at 11 a.m. with visitation at 10 a.m.
We will never forget Paul’s kind, gentle spirit, his dry sense of humor, his witty comments and his genius as a physician. His life and legacy lives on in his children.
