I had the honor and privilege to deliver this eulogy to our beloved friend/family member Sylvia Darling.   This is the exact eulogy as it was read at her funeral service on 7-6-2024 (Eulogy Part 4 of 4 due to character restrictions):

In closing, today we remember and celebrate Sylvia Darling for her kindness, resilience, and the way she touched all of our lives.  Though she faced some challenges… her strength, spirit, and Christian faith never wavered.  She left her mark on every one of us here.

I want to thank each of you for being here today, for your support, and for the love you have shown Sylvia throughout her life.
Rest in peace, Sylvia.  You will be forever missed, but your memory will live on in our hearts and minds.  Thank you.

Upon further discussion it was determined that Sylvia would take this extra fruit, not for herself, but to deliver it on a nightly basis to her co-residents and friends at that facility from her power chair and a basket.  That story clearly highlights the love and compassion that Sylvia had for other people despite her own struggles.  Guillan Barre took some of Sylvia’s physical mobility, but it could not take away her spirit, her heart, or her love of life and people.
I have admired Sylvia for so many things over the years.  But the top three things I admired her for are as follows:

-	Number one was her amazing memory.  Sylvia was one of those people that could remember the exact day things happened on and details that most people soon forget or never retained in the first place.  It was truly impressive and a sight to behold.

-	Number two was her resiliency and grit following the Guillan Barre diagnosis, losing her husband unexpectedly and having her life turned upside down as a result, and finally the last couple of years with mounting health concerns and less and less mobility.   She might not have looked like one, but she was a fighter in the truest sense.  She surprised many with how she was able to overcome various infections, bounce back from several bad falls, and no doubt outlived any actuarial predictions that would have been applied to someone with the same ailments.
 
-	Number three was just how loving and kind she was.  She had an incredible smile, and I can’t tell you how many people met her and said how sweet she was to them.  Even over the last couple of months when she would get to struggling, I would get close to her ear and say “Sylvia we all love you and we are all taking care of you”… she would immediately respond… “I know and I love all of you too”.

The main leather bound one that I used to see her pour over as a child at her kitchen table is with her today and will be buried alongside her.  Paging through it the other day it was full of highlighted verses cover to cover with various inscriptions Sylvia would write off in the margins such as “I believe” and “I love Jesus”.  
Sylvia’s life was full of many blessings, but it also came with some challenges and obstacles that would have been daunting for absolutely anyone.  One of her biggest life challenges was waking up one day in her 50’s with difficulty moving her legs.  This led to a devastating diagnosis of Guillain-Barre Syndrome, and a prolonged stint in a rehabilitation facility at The Ohio State University.  The nerve damage from this syndrome left her with limited mobility the rest of her life.  Many people with Guillan Barre are unable to ever walk again.  But Sylvia did not let this diagnosis slow her down or quell her immense spirit one bit.  I saw her go from a basic cane, to a quad cane, to two quad canes, to a rollator/walker and eventually to a motorized wheelchair.  We would periodically have to maintain and fix her power chairs so that she could stay on the move visiting her friends and going to Bingo, craft class, Red Hatter club meetings, and church services.  Sylvia was an elite Bingo player and Word Searcher.  I also remember there were a few instances of required dry wall repair after some overzealous driving by Sylvia.  During one of our treatment team meetings for Sylvia there was a request made from a facility that Sylvia not take as many pieces of the fruit from the dining room.

Eulogy for Sylvia Jean Darling (delivered at Sunset Cemetery on 7-6-2024)
We are gathered here today to honor and remember the life of Sylvia Jean Darling.  My condolences go out to Sylvia’s family and friends during this difficult time.  For those that may not know me, I am Bill Resch, and Sylvia and her husband Virgil lived immediately next door to my family on Johnstown Road in New Albany, Ohio.  It was one of those classic Americana/Norman Rockwell streets where all of the neighbors knew each other and were very close knit.  Sylvia would eventually become my sister Jennifer and I’s babysitter after school and before my parents returned home from work.  Sylvia would always warmly welcome us, make us a snack and then, along with her beloved cat Nosey, we would all proceed to watch soap operas together.  Our all-time favorite soap opera was General Hospital, and I can still remember the immense anticipation we all had for the famous Luke and Laura wedding in 1981.  Those formative times in the late 70’s and early 80’s laid the foundation of a special lifelong relationship with Sylvia that we maintained right up until two Fridays ago.  She truly was part of the Resch family.  
Today, I hope to share some meaningful memories and select characteristics that help capture the essence of the person Sylvia was.  She was born into a close-knit family of her own in Taulbee, Kentucky… which is in Southeastern Kentucky… about 4 hours away from Columbus.  Her younger sister Malvery has told me on numerous occasions what a wonderful and caring sister she was to all of her siblings and relatives.  This is also where she developed her deep faith in God.  Sylvia owned around ten Bibles.

Thank you for supporting me in Job's Daughter.  Thank you for loving me and making me feel special.  Give my mama Wanda Boss a big hug and thank Jesus for everything in my life.  Loveya more than you will know.
