

Pete spent his entire life in Columbus, Ohio, where he attended Columbus City Schools. He graduated from Eastmoor High School where he excelled in wrestling and earned several honors and a State Championship. He also enjoyed boxing at the Beatty Recreation Center where he won a Golden Glove Championship for his weight class. He attended Ohio State University and briefly served as a Columbus Police Officer. He later went on to work for and retire from GMAC (General Motors Acceptance Corporation) in 2001.
During the span of his life and before his long illness, there was nothing Pete felt he couldn't fix or repair. He was truly the "Jack of all Trades" and master of some. He was always willing to assist friends and family members with home improvement projects which included electrical work, plumbing, and car repairs. He was truly gifted and had the unique ability to examine a problem and figure out the solution without any formal training.
Pete also had many hobbies which included his motorcycle, golfing, horseback riding and his favorite, which was boating and water activities.
Pete accepted Jesus Christ at an early age, but on February 22, 2009, he was baptized in the name of Jesus at Christian Outreach Ministeries and later received the infilling of the Holy Spirit at his home.
Pete was preceded in death by his parents Herman and Maxine Phipps-Johnson. His stepfather, Horace E. Johnston. Maternal grandparents, Robert and Mary Phipps-Pyles, and Paternal grandparents, Jesse and Annabelle Johnson, Mother and Father-in-Law Floyd and Joan Gazaway-Ray.
He is survived by his wife and companion of 42 years, Marshelia (Marty) Gazaway-Johnson and their daughter Sydney (Quintin) as well as his sons: Winslow Jr., Clifford, and Peter, daughters; Charlene and Natalie. Sisters, Dottie (John) Vincent, Robin Warner, and Michelle Angel and brother, Donald Johnson. His beloved grandchildren and great grandchildren, Aunts Rita Johnson and Carolyn Phipps-Johnson (Jerome), Uncle Lewis Curtwright, Sister-in-Laws Gigi (Sonny) Singer, Venita Gazaway, Brother-in-Law, Timothy Gazaway and Floyd Ray Jr. As well as a host of nephews, nieces, cousins, and friends. He is also survived by his longtime and special friends Robert (Barbara) Taylor and John B. Johnson.
A visitation for Pete will be held Monday, September 9, 2024 from 11:00 AM to 12:00 PM at Schoedinger Margarum Northeast, 1051 E Johnstown Road, Gahanna, Ohio 43230 immediately followed by a 12:00 PM funeral service. Following services, a procession to Blendon Central Cemetery, 6330 S Hempstead Rd, Westerville, OH 43081.
A repast will follow internment on Monday, September 9, 2024 at Schoedinger Northeast, 1051 E Johnstown Road, Gahanna, Ohio 43230.
