Martha Cornelia "Connie" (Poole) Crawford

Martha Cornelia “Connie” Poole Crawford, age 106, passed away on December 20th, 2021. She was a long time native of Irondale, Alabama, but moved to Gardendale for the last few years of her life to be closer to her family. She was born on December 13th, 1915, to Garnett and Pearl Poole. She graduated from Shades Valley High School, went into nurses training and became a dedicated employee of UAB Hospital for 44 years, working most of those as Head Nurse on the Neurosurgery Floor. After retirement she enjoyed travel and made several trips abroad. Her first trip to Israel was let by two Methodist ministers, Rev. Bill Bostick and Rev. Andy Wolfe. She was the oldest member of Irondale United Methodist Church. She actively participated in many activities at the Irondale Senior Citizen Center and loved many types of crafting including needlepoint and ceramics.

Connie was preceded in death by a son, James Harry Speer, and a daughter, Patricia Speer Bounds; her parents, brother and two sisters. She is survived by her daughter, Barbara Speer Swafford (Jerry), 5 grandchildren and 3 great grandchildren.

Services will be on Wednesday, December 29th, 2021, with a visitation from 10-11 at Gardendale Ridout’s Funeral Home. Graveside service will be officiated by Rev. Mike Irons and held at 12 Noon at Forest Hill Cemetery, 431 North 60th Street, Birmingham, AL, 35212.
