

With the days leading up to her passing, Nanci maintained her kindness and passion, love of family and friends, as she was always there for someone in need. Nanci will be remembered for always being someone to depend on. Born in Birmingham on August 4, 1948, she attended Springdale School, Tarant High School, and Jeff State College. Nanci worked as a paralegal for 30 years and was also a pianist/organist at Springdale Baptist Church. Nanci was an avid Alabama fan, but also loved the Atlanta Braves, Gulf Shores Alabama beaches, and John Grisham books.
She is survived by her son, Josh Erwin Thompson (Kimi Denise Thompson), and mother, Johnnie Mary Derricott; grandchildren, Cody Dutton, Kaitlyn Ballew, Baily Dutton; and great grandchildren, Axel Dutton, Eva Ballew, and Aiden Ballew. She was preceeded in death by her husband, James L. Thompson, father, Brooks K. Smith, and step-father, Edwin A. Derricott.
A visitation will be held at Ridout's Gardendale Chapel, located at 2029 Decatur Highway, Gardendale, AL 35071, on February 9, 2026, from 11:00 am to 12:30 pm.
A graveside service will follow at Oakwood Memorial Gardens, 2100 Moncrief Road, Gardendale, AL 35071, on February 9, 2026, from 12:45 pm to 1:15 pm.
