Olney lived life simply—rooted in faith and deeply devoted to family. He was known for his tireless work ethic, kindness, unfailing patience, and boundless generosity. When asked how he was, his common response, “better than I deserve,” reflected the humility and gratitude that defined him. He had a profound appreciation for life and was known for his unwavering positivity, with a smile on his face regardless of the circumstance. He will be remembered for the way he made others feel—valued, supported, and better for having known him.
He proudly served in the United States Army as a Specialist Fourth Class in the Armor Division and was honorably discharged, earning the Good Conduct Medal. He spent over 23 years with Powers & Associates, carrying on a lifelong dedication to construction that began when he was just old enough to hold a hammer—able to fix just about anything and always willing to help others.
He had a deep love for animals and the outdoors, and was most at home there, where he was known as an excellent marksman. He never met a stranger and had a natural gift for connecting with people, always ready for a good conversation and a fresh pot of coffee. He had a deep appreciation for his Native American heritage and his Creek and Cherokee roots, with a love of hunting for arrowheads even as a child. Some of his greatest joy came from trading unique finds, where he had a remarkable ability to see the hidden value and history in each treasure.
He is preceded in death by his beloved wife, Nikki, with whom he shared more than 60 years of marriage, defined by his unwavering devotion, care, and love. He is survived by his daughters, Lynda Daniel (Tommy) and Lori Crowder (Tracy Horton); his son, Leslie Mitchell; sister-in-law, Connie Thomas; his grandchildren: Amanda Pendergrass (Jason), Casey Daniel, Lindsey Ray (Jacob), Jeffrey Crowder, Joseph Crowder (Taylor), and Hunter Mitchell (Bryanna Mullins); and his great-grandchildren: Anna Lynn, Thomas, Sadie, Daniel, Declan, Levi, Emma Louise, Andy, and Aidan.
He will be remembered for his steady presence and strength, his uplifting spirit, and quiet goodness. Beloved by all those blessed to know him, he was a constant source of encouragement and joy. His legacy is one of love, kindness, and selflessness—and will be reflected in the many who strive to follow his example.
