Theresa Dowswell Purser, age 88, of Gardendale, Alabama, passed away peacefully on February 28, 2026. Born in Ensley, Alabama, to the late Marie Goins and William Dowswell, Theresa lived a life defined by fierce love, tireless service, and a spirited sense of humor.
In 1959, Theresa married the love of her life, Robert Junior Purser. Together, they built a beautiful family and a life of many years before his passing. Theresa was a woman of deep faith and a devoted member of St. Elizabeth Ann Seton Catholic Church in Gardendale. She gave generously of her time as the president of the Ladies’ Sodality and as a member of the church council. Her heart for others started early; while raising her four children, she served as a faithful advocate for the Holy Childhood Propagation of the Faith in the Diocese of Birmingham, raising funds for underprivileged children worldwide. Later in life, she enjoyed a successful and fulfilling career in sales with Ram Inc.
Beyond her work and service, Theresa—affectionately known as our "Mischief Maker"—knew how to enjoy life. She loved traveling, shopping, and frequenting her favorite "fancy" restaurants. Whether she was visiting a casino or spending time with her family, her joy was infectious. Above all, her family was her greatest treasure; she loved them wholeheartedly, and her life was a beautiful reflection of that devotion.
Theresa was preceded in death by her beloved husband, Robert; her brother, Jimmy Dowswell; four half-sisters; and her grandson, Timothy.
Her legacy of love lives on through her four children: Katherine (Jim) Perkins, William “Bill” (Denise) Purser, Tammy (Tony) Smith, and Michelle (Garvis) Thrasher. She was the proud "Nan" to eleven grandchildren: Valerie, Sean, Heather, Tiffany, Shane (Lisa), Chanel, Jimmy, Theresa, Tamara (Chase), Justin (Cara), and Nichole.
She also leaves behind many great-grandchildren, including Hailey (Michael), Tinley, Raegan, Anna, Ryder, Georgia Kate, Will, and Fletcher; her sister-in-law, Shirley Dowswell; and a host of nieces and nephews whom she loved as dearly as her own.
Theresa will be deeply missed and forever cherished by all who were blessed to know her.
Services to honor and celebrate Theresa’s life will be held on Friday, March 6, 2026, at St. Elizabeth Ann Seton Catholic Church, located at 334 Main St, Gardendale, AL 35071. Visitation will start at 11:00 AM, with Mass at noon.
