He attended Central High School in Cape Girardeau, Missouri. He entered the Navy in February 1971 and served as a medic, so many of his friends called him “Doc”. He did two tours in Vietnam, the first on the USS Providence and the second on the USS Kitty Hawk. He always said it was his privilege to serve his country and was proud to be a veteran. After being honorably discharged, he worked in a variety of fields including being a juvenile detention officer, bulk manager for Pepsi Cola-Austin, a private investigator, and the newspaper business. He was a kind and loving husband, Dad, Paw Paw, and friend. He had the biggest heart and loved to laugh and his smile lit up the room. One friend referred to him as a “gentle giant” and his grandkids thought he was Santa Claus. He enjoyed the great outdoors and time with family and friends. In his later years, he was known to patrol the block on his scooter and perform random acts of kindness for his neighbors. Although he faced many health challenges over the years, he didn’t let that get him down.
He married his wife and true love, Rebecca “Becky” Emily Prikryl, on April 11, 1980 in Austin, TX. He was so proud of his daughters and loved to be surrounded by his girls. However, he was overjoyed when he welcomed his sons-in-law into the family but he was happiest when he was surrounded by his grandchildren.
He is survived by his loving wife, Rebecca, his daughters Ramona Martinez and husband Jimmy of Cedar Park and Chelsea Beck-Smith and husband Matthew Smith of Boerne; his sister, Robyne Shreck of Springfield, Missouri and his brother, Jason Beck and wife Jane of Peoria, Arizona; his four grandchildren, Chloe and Noah Martinez of Cedar Park and Emma and Isabella “Bella” Smith of Boerne; brother-in law Rufus Prikryl and wife Sylvia of San Antonio; Aunt Beverly Beck of Russellville, Arkansas, and numerous nieces, nephews, cousins, and friends.
His family would like to thank the providers and staff of the Department of Veteran Affairs for caring for him for many years and their continued dedication to the veteran community.
