Elizabeth Frances Lester (“Betty”) was born at home in Ft. Worth, Texas to parents Clarence and Sarah (“Sadie’) Plummer on Sept. 13, 1922. She was also welcomed to the world that day by 5 year old sister, Millicent (“Millie”).
Betty spent her childhood years growing up in Ft. Worth. She attended George Clark Elementary in south Ft.Worth, worshiped Sunday mornings at Ft. Worth’s Hemphill Presbyterian Church , and traveled with her mother and sister during summer months, as they accompanied her father on work trips (Otis Elevator Co.).
Upon her graduation from Ft. Worth Paschal High School in 1940, Betty attended Texas Tech (Lubbock, Texas). She designated her major field of study as Physical Education. However, upon completion of her freshman year,Betty and her high school sweetheart, Billy Lee Lester (‘Bill”), decided to get married. (May of 1941).
By the end of the following year, Betty and Bill had welcomed a son, Michael, to their family. However, within a matter of time, Bill was called to serve his country as a World War ll USAF Tail Gunner. During that period, Betty and young Mike (or’Mickey “ as he was sometimes called) lived with extended family and Betty worked for the Ft Worth Quartermaster Distribution Center.
When Bill returned from over seas, the family purchased a home on the north side of Ft. Worth. Some years later, a son, Terry , was added to the family. Betty enjoyed every moment of being a Homemaker , while Bill spent long hours working as an Otis Elevator Mechanic.
Eventually, their dreams came true when, in the mid 1950’s, they build a home on some land in Keller, Texas. During that period of time, Betty’s hobbies included Garden Club, Bridge Club, serving as a Boy Scout Den Mother and teaching Sunday School. However, when the boys grew older, she decided to peruse the College degree she had started so many years ago. She enrolled in Texas Women’s University and received her Bachelor of Science degree in 1968. She loved teaching 4 th grade for 22 years in the Keller Independent School District. During the summer months, Betty would travel with husband Bill. By that time Bill had become an Elevator Inspector for the Federal Government. He would work during the day as Betty explored new and different areas of each place they visited.
Once Betty retired from teaching, she continued to focus on travel. She often traveled with friends and travel groups (and a few times with Bill), across many states of the US, enjoying the Caribbean Islands and touring Europe. Her favorite two memories were visits to England, where she got to know cousins she had never before met. Betty was also very proud of the fact that she was able to visit the place of her ancestors with sister Millicent and her Mother, Sadie.
Another prized accomplishment in Betty’s (and Bill’s ) life was that they were able to celebrate not only their 50th wedding anniversary but also their 70th wedding anniversary. They celebrated 70 years at The Conservatory Independent Living in Keller, Texas, They did so just 4 moths prior to Bill passing into Heaven.
Betty is survived by immediate family members, son Michael Lester, son Terry Lester with his wife Priscilla (‘Pris”) and grandchildren Phillip Lester with his wife Penny, Jason Lester with his wife Robin, Jeff Lester with his wife Bobbie, Brandon Lester with his wife Jenna, Alison Zacharias with her husband John and Cody Lester with his wife Peggy.
