Bell High School and later attended The University of Texas at Austin briefly before reenlisting in the U.S. Navy. Jim proudly served his country, retiring as a Senior Chief Petty Officer after a distinguished career. His service included a tour in Vietnam and later took him and his devoted wife across the United States, where they raised their growing family while he recruited the next generation to serve their country.
A man of many interests, Jim found joy in mastering new technology, creating beautiful pieces through woodworking, and amateur geology.
He was preceded in death by his parents, Paul Koen and Vira Romine, and his half-brother, Bud Koen.
Jim's legacy of love is carried on by his beloved wife of 53 years, Kathryn "Kathy" Koen (née Lambert). Together, they built a beautiful, rich life and raised six children: Scott, Glen, Lisa, Kelly, Daniel, and Kevin. He was a proud and welcoming father-in-law to Kanika, Alison, and Vivian, and a joyful "Pop" to eight grandchildren who will miss him dearly. He is also survived by his brother, John Thomas "TK" Koen, and his sister, Paula Kleppe (née Koen).
