Janet was born to William “Clarke” Haney & Mary “Louise” Haney in Ironton, OH. She was the first daughter born after four sons Sonny, Buddy, David, & Louis who all preceded her in death. She was followed in birth by a younger sister Carroll Lee & then another brother Michael Paul who both survive her. Janet was her father’s joy, her mother’s helper, her sister’s best friend & a source of comfort & encouragement to all her brothers. In 1953, Janet graduated from St. Mary’s School of Nursing in Huntington, West VA, earning a Bachelor’s of Science & the title of Registered Nurse. This degree was followed with many years of continuing education courses in the field of nursing. For nearly 30 years she gave her efforts of love & healing in the fields of neonatal intensive care, cardiac intensive care, & then hemodialysis. On August 1, 1953 Janet married her child hood sweetheart Thomas Meyers “Sonny” Madden, now deceased. Janet & Tom shared love & life for 45 years until Tom’s death in 1998. From the years of 1954 through 1964, Janet gave birth, life, & love to eight children but she would not want us to leave unmentioned the two children she lost in miscarriage with whom she is united now. These births took place from Ohio to Texas to Alaska to North Carolina & finally to Virginia. She & Tom had four boys Shawn, Kevin, Tom, Brian, then three girls Mary Ann, Barbara Lee, & Sheila, then her last son, her Valentine Baby, Tim. During Janet’s lifetime, her family expanded to a size that reflected her God-like capacity for unconditional love. She has 82 descendents, living & deceased which include her children, her son-in-laws, her daughter-in-laws, her twenty-three grandchildren, & her twenty-one great grandchildren. To Janet, family was not defined by conventions & legalities but by the fact that if you loved & were loved by someone she loved, then to her, you were family. Janet’s life was filled with love. Her motto was a favorite quote from Mother Theresa: “If you judge people, you have no time to love them.” Janet lived this motto through her volunteer activities in Georgetown, TX, her generosity to St. Jude’s Children’s Hospital, and the way she showed kindness and extended friendship to all who entered her life. The lesson she would leave us is the lesson of the unconditional love of our heavenly Father.
