Mildred Jean Pierce Harris (Rogers) was born in Georgetown, Texas on February 4th, 1928, to Lott and Effie Rogers. She spent her childhood years growing up in “Old Georgetown”, graduating from Georgetown High School in 1945, and Southwestern University in 1948. At Southwestern, she was a member of the Alpha Delta Pi sorority and Pi Gamma Mu national honor society.
Mildred left Georgetown during her early parenting years but returned in 1967 to continue her career as an elementary school teacher for GISD. She had many fond memories of her profession, building lasting relationships with students and staff. She cherished her time in the classroom and was a dedicated role model teacher. In 1978, she obtained a Master of Education degree from Southwest Texas State University in San Marcos. Although she devoted her life to teaching, she found time to enjoy outdoor and social activities with friends and an occasional game of golf or tennis. She retired from teaching in 1986, when she married Sam Harris (formerly of Georgetown), and moved to Burnet, Texas.
While in Burnet, she enjoyed ranch activities such as horseback riding, bird watching, and gardening, as well as being a grandmother to her six grandchildren. Mildred valued her time as a volunteer at the Seton Hospital, the Burnet public library, the local Burnet thrift store, and 1st Methodist Church of Burnet. She loved her life in the country. In 2010, Sam and Mildred returned to their hometown of Georgetown. They spent their remaining years together at the Wesleyan Estrella Independent Living Center, meeting new friends, enjoying new hobbies and activities, as well as spending time with old friends. They attended 1st United Methodist Church of Georgetown, the same Church where Mildred grew up as a child.
On March 16th, 2022, at the age of 94, Mildred passed peacefully in her home at the Wesleyan, receiving the final Peace of her new Heavenly Home. The family extends their thanks and appreciation to all the wonderful Wesleyan staff and the loving caregivers of home health and hospice.
Mildred is survived by her two daughters, Priscilla Lester with her husband Terry, and Penny Mickan with her husband Danny. She was proud of her family and thankful that her two daughters resided in Georgetown and provided her with such loving care. She adored her grandchildren Jeff Lester (wife Bobbie), Brandon Lester (wife Jenna), Cody Lester (wife Peggy), Morgan Mickan, Madison Schaefer (husband Sean), and Murphy Mickan. She is also survived by 11 great grandchildren, as well as many nieces and nephews and their families. She was preceded in death by her parents, her husband Sam, her two sisters, Mary Cathryn Gossett along with her husband Tommy, Marjorie A. Scarbrough along with her husband James, and her niece Elizabeth Gossett Holmes.
