William Joseph Schwertner “Billy Joe” was born on March 15, 1956, in Temple, Texas to William (Bill) Schwertner and Bernice Schwertner. He attended Holy Trinity Catholic School and later graduated from Jarrell High School.
Billy was married to Mae (Copeland) Schwertner on November 19, 1988. Together they shared 37 loving years of marriage and many wonderful memories together with their family and friends.
Billy dedicated 40 years of hard work and commitment to Coca Cola before retiring to embrace his greatest joy in life- being a full time Papa. He was a hardworking man who took great pride in tending to his cattle, working on his family farm, and caring for his garden. He found true joy in being outdoors and was deeply devoted to providing for and looking after his family. He loved faithfully working through his “honey-do” list for his beloved bride, day in and day out, always eager to lend a hand and care for the home they built together. He loved to BBQ, cook, and serve others. He cherished the time spent preparing the meal just as much as the fellowship that came with it, especially when his boys and his friends gathered around the BBQ pit. He was known for seasoning his food with a generous hand--never shy with the salt or the butter--serving up every meal with rich flavor and an even richer smile. He was a kindhearted and genuine man who was always ready to lend a helping hand, willing to do anything he could to care for those around him.
Billy is survived by his wife, Mae Schwertner; his children Melissa Jones (Siclician), Amanda Werchan (Bill), Richard Jones (Nolbert), Brad Jones (Aimee), Stephen Schwertner (Kourtney), and Corey Schwertner (Valerie); his grandchildren Megan Kelm (Jako), Mason and Aaron Werchan; Cali, Cadence, and Kingston Jones; Rustin, Dustin, Westin Schwertner; Greyson, Jaxon, Georgia Schwertner; his great granddaughters Kaisey and Hailey Kelm; his sisters Cathy Havelka (Ed), and Carolyn Barker (Robert); and countless nieces, nephews, cousins, and friends. He is proceeded in death by his parents William and Bernice Schwertner; and his sister Joan Schwertner.
Billy “Papa” will always be remembered as a man who lived with purpose, guided by faith, strengthened by his traditions, and devoted completely to his family. He led not by words alone, but by example—through kindness, integrity, sacrifice, and unwavering love. His legacy is not only found in memories, but in the values, he instilled, the lives he touched, and the strength he gave to those who walk forward in his footsteps. Though he may no longer be with us in body; his spirit, teachings, and love will remain forever in our hearts. He leaves behind a family grounded in faith, united by tradition, and forever blessed by the life that he lived.
