
Bluff, Arkansas, to Dolly Bell Matthews and Vosie H. Matthews Sr.
James Lee had five sisters and two brothers from this union: Lucille,
Maggie, Ethel, Jessie, and Betty, and two brothers, Vosie Jr. and
Robert.
James Lee spent his childhood in Pine Bluff, Arkansas, and then
moved to California in 1955. He was a semi-truck driver for
Angelica, where he worked for 25 plus-years.
The love of his life was Sally Ann Bradley, whom he married on
October 17, 1959. To this union, four children were born. James,
Daphane, Romell, and Kenneth. James Lee and Sally were married
for 64 years.
James Lee was a quiet man with a gentle spirit. Whether it was
watching baseball or basketball, he was an avid sports fan, and his
favorite team was the Los Angeles Lakers. He also enjoyed attending
the horse races, even making the occasional bet.
James Lee loved his family and enjoyed spending time with his
children and grandchildren.
James Lee leaves to mourn the passing of his wife, Sally Matthews;
children, James (Janice) Matthews, Daphane (Stanley) Smartt,
Romell Matthews, and Kenneth (Leslie) Matthews. Grandchildren,
Jasmin, Janae, Kendall, and Cameron; four half-siblings from his
father’s second marriage: Marilyn Handley, Carolyn Matthews,
George Matthews, and Steven Matthews. He also leaves eight
stepbrothers and sisters and a host of nieces, nephews, cousins,
friends, and in-laws who loved and will miss him dearly.
James Lee was preceded in death by his parents, brothers Vosie Jr.
and Robert, and sisters Lucille, Maggie, Ethel, Jessie, and Betty.
