Josefina F. Sanchez

Born in Guatemala, Josefina came to the United States at the young age of 22 in search of opportunity and a new beginning. Not long after her arrival, she met the love of her life Alfredo Rolando. Together, they built a beautiful life and raised four children — two sons and two daughters — rooted in love, faith, and family. They were married for 48 years.

Josie’s entire life revolved around her love for God and her faith shaped every part of how she lived her life. She prayed daily for family, friends, and even those she hadn’t met — her faith was her compass, and her church community was her extended family.

After many years in Los Angeles, the family relocated to Colorado. She loved the beauty of the mountains. Most of all, she loved being close to her grandchildren. She attended every soccer, football, and basketball game that her 3 grandchildren, at the time, had.

She enjoyed cheering on her favorite soccer teams and watching sports with her sons, playing lotería with family, and watching action-packed movies. Like a true Guatemalan, she loved a good cup of coffee and pan dulce, along with enjoying many traditional Guatemalan dishes.

She was preceded in death by her parents, Rigoberto and Eulalia, and her two brothers, Luis and Octavio. In a poignant and deeply moving moment, her dear friend and sister in Christ, Sister Ingrid, followed her into the Kingdom of Heaven just hours after saying goodbye — a testament to the powerful bonds of faith and friendship they shared.

She is survived by her eldest daughter Maria Funes and son-in-law Denys Funes, and their three sons: Joseph Lionel Funes and his wife Hunter, Jacob Danyel Funes, and Jeremy Abraham Funes. Three years ago, she joyfully welcomed her first great-grandson, “blue eyed” James Funes.

She is also survived by her son Alfredo “Freddy,” daughter-in-law Carolina, and their sons Isaiah Ezekiel “Chequelito” and Josiah Isaac. Her youngest children are Stephanie Lizeth and David Emanuel. All of her children were the lights of her life and they all brought her pride and joy.

She also leaves behind her brothers Ernesto, Oscar and Guillermo, her sister Blanca, and many cherished nieces and nephews — with special mention of nieces Joanna, Mayra, and Kathy, who held a special place in her heart.

She is also survived by her cherished church brothers and sisters, who were an extension of her family. Their love, prayers, and fellowship brought her comfort, strength, and joy throughout her spiritual journey.

A devoted mother, her greatest joys came from celebrating her children’s milestones — birthdays, graduations, weddings — always insisting on capturing the moment with photos before anyone could cut the cake.

A master in the kitchen, she shared her love through food, delighting family and friends with her homemade tortitas de carne, chile rellenos, Guatemalan tamales, chuchitos, and ensalada rusa. Even when her health made it difficult to cook, she still oversaw every dish, “gently” correcting her husband's attempts to recreate her recipes with a loving but discerning eye.

Her strength, compassion, and fierce devotion to her family and faith will be missed beyond measure. She leaves behind a legacy of love, laughter, and enduring faith that will live on through every prayer whispered, every recipe passed down, and every family photo taken before a celebration.

We are heartbroken by her loss, but comforted in knowing she is at peace and reunited with those who went before her and our Heavenly Father.

Con profundo amor y gratitud por una vida plena, anunciamos el fallecimiento de nuestra querida madre, abuela, bisabuela, hermana, tía y amiga.

Nacida en Guatemala, Josefina llegó a Estados Unidos a la temprana edad de 22 años en busca de oportunidades y un nuevo comienzo. Poco después de su llegada, conoció al amor de su vida, Alfredo Rolando. Juntos, construyeron una vida hermosa y criaron cuatro hijos —dos varones y dos mujeres— arraigados en el amor, la fe y la familia. Estuvieron casados durante 48 años.

Toda la vida de Josie giró en torno a su amor por Dios, y su fe moldeó cada aspecto de su vida. Oraba a diario por su familia, sus amigos e incluso por aquellos que no conocía; su fe la guió y su comunidad eclesial era su familia extendida.

Después de muchos años en Los Ángeles, la familia se mudó a Colorado. Amaba la belleza de las montañas, pero sobre todo, le encantaba estar cerca de sus nietos. Ella asistió a todos los partidos de fútbol, fútbol americano y baloncesto que jugaron sus tres nietos en ese momento.

Disfrutaba animando a sus equipos de fútbol favoritos y viendo deportes con sus hijos, jugando lotería con la familia y viendo películas de acción. Como una verdadera guatemalteca, amaba una buena taza de café y pan dulce, además de disfrutar de muchos platillos típicos guatemaltecos.

Fue precedida en muerte por sus padres, Rigoberto y Eulalia, y sus dos hermanos, Luis y Octavio. En un momento conmovedor y profundamente emotivo, su querida amiga y hermana en Cristo, la Hermana Ingrid, la siguió al Reino de los Cielos pocas horas después de despedirse– un testimonio de la poderosa conexión de fe y amistad que compartieron.

Le sobreviven su hija mayor, María Funes, y su yerno, Denys Funes, y sus tres hijos: Joseph Leonel Funes y su esposa Hunter, Jacob Danyel Funes y Jeremy Abraham Funes. Hace tres años, recibió con gran alegría a su primer bisnieto, James Funes, de ojos azules.

También le sobreviven su hijo Alfredo “Freddy”, su nuera Carolina y sus hijos Isaiah Ezekiel “Chequelito” y Josiah Isaac. Sus hijos menores son Stephanie Lizeth y David Emanuel. Todos sus hijos fueron la luz de su vida y cada uno de ellos le trajo orgullo y alegría.

Asimismo le sobreviven sus hermanos Ernesto, Oscar y Guillermo, su hermana Blanca y muchos sobrinos y sobrinas queridos, con especial mención a sus sobrinas Joanna, Mayra y Kathy, quienes ocuparon un lugar especial en su corazón.

También le sobreviven sus queridos hermanos y hermanas de la iglesia, quienes fueron una extensión de su familia. Su amor, oraciones y compañerismo le brindaron consuelo, fortaleza y alegría a lo largo de su camino espiritual.

Madre devota, sus mayores alegrías provenían de celebrar los momentos importantes de sus hijos (cumpleaños, graduaciones, bodas), insistiendo siempre en capturar el momento con fotos antes de que alguien pudiera cortar el pastel.

Una maestra en la cocina, compartió su amor a través de la comida, deleitando a su familia y amigos con sus tortitas de carne, chiles rellenos, tamales guatemaltecos, chuchitos y ensalada rusa. Incluso cuando su salud le dificultaba cocinar, supervisaba cada plato, corrigiendo con “delicadeza” los intentos de su esposo de recrear sus recetas, con una mirada amorosa pero perspicaz.

Extrañaremos enormemente su fuerza, compasión y devoción inquebrantable por su familia y su fe. Deja un legado de amor, risas y una fe inquebrantable que perdurará en cada oración susurrada, cada receta transmitida y cada foto familiar tomada antes de una celebración.

Estamos profundamente dolidos por su partida, pero nos reconforta saber que está en paz y se ha reunido con quienes la precedieron y con nuestro Padre Celestial.
