Timothy Aerial Gardner, a loving father, devoted brother, cherished friend, and dedicated public servant, passed away after a valiant battle with cancer on January 10, 2024, in Hacienda Heights, California. A heavenly reunion awaited with his parents and a host of relatives and friends.
Tim was born on December 20, 1949, to his proud parents, Aerial and Dora Gardner who instilled in him the values of compassion, courage, and hard work. He was the middle child in the family with Randell as his elder brother and Gina as his younger sister. In high school, he excelled at being a swimmer and water polo player. He also enjoyed working on cars and engines and discovered he had an aptitude for putting things together. These skills later helped him when he joined the Air Force Reserves and was trained as a jet engine mechanic. After high school, he worked building dune buggies from Volkswagen chaises and engines. He and his father restored and rebuilt many Volkswagens together. It became as much a hobby for his father as it was for Tim. They developed a very close bond that continued throughout Aerial’s life and was especially apparent when after Aerial’s stroke, Tim devoted three years to caring for his father. Tim made it a priority to be home at 3 pm every day for their “happy hour” when they would have a glass of wine together and talk about their day.
Tim’s life was characterized by an unwavering commitment to serving his community. It was while attending Mt. San Antonio College, that he first became interested in firefighting. After earning his associate degree, he embarked on a firefighting career but didn't stop there. Tim returned to school, earning a bachelor's degree from California State University Long Beach. For an impressive span of over 30 years, he served as a dedicated firefighter with the Alhambra City Fire Department in California rising to the esteemed rank of captain. Even after retirement, he still found ways to fight fires as the Facilities Unit Leader of a Type 1 Incident Management Team that responded to forest fires and national emergencies. He assisted with the cleanup of New Orleans in the aftermath of Hurricane Katrina, aided in the search for parts of the shuttle Columbia in Texas, and responded to fires in various states including California, Utah, Alaska, and Montana, to name a few. His leadership and knowledge helped to mentor many less experienced in the field of firefighting. He had a way of making work fun. He also became known for his fine culinary skills, from which colleagues, friends, and family all benefited. He loved to cook and had a plethora of cooking magazines and recipe books.
As a devoted father to Ryan and Travis, he supported his boys in their hobbies and bragged about their achievements. He journeyed with Travis throughout the United States and even over to Europe when he was skiing and mountain biking. He was very proud of his two sons.
Outside of his professional and family life, Tim had a passion for adventure and a deep appreciation for life’s simple pleasures. He enjoyed traveling in his RV, meeting up with friends old and new, telling stories, golfing and watching football. For many summers, he would park his RV near Big Bear Lake or travel in it to Parker, Arizona where he enjoyed boating up and down the river. Wherever Tim went he would make friends. And with his charming smile and quick wit, one became a friend for life. His “better way of doing things” and wonderful laugh will be missed by those who were blessed to have known and been loved by him.
Besides his sons, he also leaves behind his devoted brother, Randell Gardner, and his wife, Jo Anne who stood by his side as pillars of support throughout his illness. Tim's sister, Gina, and her husband, Michael, also shared a special bond with him. They provided love, encouragement, and strength, and their presence brought comfort during challenging times. Tim's love also extended to his nieces and nephews and their children, who held a special place in his heart. He celebrated their achievements, offered guidance, and shared in their joys and triumphs.
Tim's memory will be forever cherished by his loved ones and the community he served. His courage, dedication, and compassionate nature will continue to inspire all who were fortunate enough to know him. Though his absence leaves a void, his spirit will live on in the hearts of those who were touched by his kindness and bravery. Rest in peace, dear brother. Your legacy as a hero, a loving family member, and a loyal friend will forever be etched in our hearts. Your sacrifice and commitment will never be forgotten
A memorial service will be held on January 27, 2024, at 3:00 pm at the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-Day Saints at 1415 Turnbull Canyon Rd in Hacienda Heights, California. Family, friends, and colleagues are invited to gather and honor Timothy's life, sharing stories and memories that will keep his spirit alive. In honoring Timothy's memory, let us remember to serve our communities with the same selflessness and dedication that he exemplified.
