

Alan Brent Miller, 28, of Roanoke, Virginia, died Friday, February 5, 2010, in High Point, North Carolina. He was a graduate of Greeneville High School, class of 1999, and received his B. A. in English and Religion from Western Kentucky University. Alan was a gifted writer and was the national winner of the Robert Penn Warren Centennial Essay Award. He is survived by his parents, Robert and Karen Miller of Parrottsville, Tennessee; his sister, Laura Ong and brother-in-law, Han Ong; a nephew, Noah Ong, all of Batesville, Arkansas; his maternal grandparents, Kermit and Laverne Willian of Munfordville, Kentucky. He is also survived by several aunts and uncles: Carletta and David Douglas of Winchester, Kentucky, Ron and Brenda Miller of East Bernstadt, Kentucky, Rodney Willian, Tim and Lisa Willian of Munfordville, Kentucky, Todd and Allison Willian of Franklin, Kentucky; as well as a host of cousins, family, and friends in several states and around the world. He was preceded in death by his paternal grandparents, Casper and Blanche Miller of East Bernstadt, Kentucky.Alan was a member of Towering Oaks Baptist Church in Greeneville, Tennessee, where he was blessed to be part of a very active youth group and where he created lifelong friendships and a lifelong faith in God. Alan spent most of his last years working and caring for the homeless in Roanoke, Virginia. His passion for the less fortunate and “those life had walked on” was his life’s work.The family will receive friends at Towering Oaks Baptist Church, Tuesday, February 9, 2010, from 2:00 p.m. until 4:00 p.m. and from 6:00 p.m. until 8:00 p.m. The funeral service will follow visitation beginning at 8:00 p.m. Pastor Dennis Shumate, Alan’s youth pastor, and Pastor Bob Cardinal, his high school Sunday school teacher, will officiate.Pallbearers will be Han Ong, Justin Woolsey, Brad Woolsey, Jon Rogers, Chris Shumate, Andrew Shumate, and Nathan Hale. Honorary pallbearers will be his many, many friends, teachers, coaches, and classmates.The family will receive friends at Sego Funeral Home in Munfordville, Kentucky, Wednesday, February 10, 2010, from 6:00 until 8:00 p.m. A funeral service will follow visitation at 8:00 p.m. at the funeral home. Pastor David Douglas and Pastor Curtis Slinker will officiate. Pallbearers will be Han Ong, Todd Willian, Tim Willian, Rodney Willian, Michael Willian, and Andrew Willian. Interment will be Thursday, February 11, 2010, at 10:00 a.m. at the Goodman Family Cemetery in Munfordville, Kentucky, with Pastor Curtis Slinker officiating.Donations in his memory may be made to the Greene County Food Bank, 107 North CutlerStreet, Greeneville, TN, 37743 or other ministry of the donors’ choice.
