Dorothy Smith Clinard was born December 22, 1925, and died August 12, 2016 at The Neighborhood of Tellico Village in Loudon County, Tennessee, which had been her residence for the last two years. She had been in hospice care for several weeks prior to her peaceful passing.
She was preceded in death by her husband, Dr. Turner Clinard, and by her three brothers: Dudley, Dean and Daniel Smith of Rome and Dalton, Georgia.
She is survived by her two sons: Norman Clinard (wife, Brenda Bowers) of Knoxville and John Clinard (wife, Lillian Austin) of Tellico Village; and both of her granddaughters: Michelle (husband, Joseph Baldwin) and Christian (husband, Nicholas Natale), with families residing in Knoxville.
She was most proud of her three grandchildren: Clayton and Susanne Baldwin and Taylor Natale.
Dorothy grew up in Rome, Georgia, and began her married life at age 17. Husband, Turner Clinard, was both a teacher and a church minister. Dot and Turner moved from Rome, Georgia, to Nashville, and then to Greeneville, Tennessee, where Turner was Minister of the Greeneville Cumberland Presbyterian Church (1952-1965). Dot received her BA from Tusculum College and taught in the Greeneville school system until 1965, when she and Turner moved to Emory, Virginia. While teaching in the elementary schools of Marion, Virginia, Dot used her spare time to earn an MS degree from the University of Virginia. In 1980, while Head of the English Dept. at Emory & Henry College, Dr. Turner Clinard died.
Fulfilling a life-long dream, Dot then moved to Talbott,Tennessee, living in her self-designed log cabin on Cherokee Lake for the next 30+ years. At the cabin, she never wasted time. She spent her days having Turner’s books published, caring for pets, and practicing her arts of scrap booking and antique collection. One of the best at decoupage, she turned junk into treasure and sold many creations at a local artists’ coop where she was a member.
Dot took full advantage of her cabin lake life by hosting friends and family members, particularly her children and grandchildren and their friends. Many were touched by her hospitality.
But nothing was greater than her love of animals. She always had a pet by her side.
Family will receive friends at Kiser-Rose-Hill Funeral Home in Greeneville from 5-7 pm, Monday Aug. 15. Funeral services will follow with Rev. James Lively officiating.
Burial will be at Shiloh Cumberland Presbyterian Church Cemetery, Tusculum, where Turner is buried. Graveside services will be at 10:00 am on Tuesday Aug. 16.
