Marilyn E. Bottomley

She was born to Charles and June Downs on February 11, 1939 in Wayne County, Indiana. She graduated from Highland Academy in 1956. After high school, she attended Southern Missionary College (now Southern Adventist University) in Collegedale, TN and received her B.S. in nursing in 1961. Following graduation, Marilyn married L. Neall Bottomley, DDS and moved to Orlando. Initially she stayed at home raising their two boys, Flip and Chuck. Once they were both in school, she went to work as a nurse for the Family Practice Residency department at Florida Hospital Orlando (now AdventHealth) from 1981-1991. Following this, she worked for Dr. Robert T. Hoover as his nurse in his OB/GYN practice.

Upon their retirement, she and Neall bought a farm in Greeneville, Tennessee and split their time between the farm and their home in Orlando. Following Neall’s passing in 2005, she sold the farm and returned to Orlando full time to be near her sons and grandsons. A few years later, she reconnected with and married her college friend Butch Coggin in 2011. For the next 6 years, they would spend summers in Virginia and winters in Orlando.

She loved the mountains of Tennessee and Virginia and would spend her time gardening and being outside. She also enjoyed traveling, quilting, cooking and baking. She did not like to be idle so she volunteered at church thrift shops while in Greeneville, Virginia and in Orlando. Most of all, she loved spending time with her family and friends.

She was preceded in death by her parents Charles and June Downs; and her husbands, L. Neall Bottomley and Julian T. “Butch” Coggin.

She leaves behind her sons, L.N. “Flip” Bottomley (Carolyn) of Longwood, FL and R.C. “Chuck” Bottomley of Orlando, FL; grandsons, Jackson (Shelby) Bottomley of Melbourne, FL and Nicholas (Claudia) Bottomley of Longwood, FL; as well as six nephews and nieces and their children.

A private family interment will take place in Greeneville, TN on January 28, 2024. A celebration of her life and memories is being planned for friends and family in Orlando later in the spring.
