Born in Kingston, Ontario, Allen spent his early childhood there before moving to Angola, Indiana, while his father pursued his education. He later attended Downsview Secondary School in Toronto. Allen’s love for animals led him to the Ontario Veterinary College at the University of Guelph, where he graduated in 1972 and went on to build a respected career in veterinary small animal surgery.
He met the love of his life, Gayle, in Toronto in 1964. Their first date at Casa Loma marked the beginning of a beautiful partnership. They married in 1969 and settled in Guelph, where they raised their family.
Allen was independent, driven, and deeply dedicated—to his work, to his passions, and most of all to his family. A lifelong animal lover, he was also an avid sailor and world traveler, spending years exploring the seas. Though often serious, his playful side shone through when sailing or in the company of his grandchildren, who were the light of his life. It was in those moments, surrounded by them, that he was truly at peace and happiest.
He leaves behind a legacy of quiet strength, deep love, and a life well-lived. He will be deeply missed.
Allen was a loving husband to Gayle for 56 years. He was a wonderful father to Andrew (Kim) and Janet (Alex) and an adoring grandfather to Rhya, Mikayla and Ellery. He was the beloved brother of Brian (Judy), and a cherished uncle to Caty, Rob and Leslie.
Friends will be received on Wednesday, June 4 from 12:00 noon to 2:00 pm at Gilbert MacIntyre and Son, Hart Chapel, 1099 Gordon Street, Guelph. A Celebration of Life will take place at 2:00 pm, followed by a reception in the Fellowship Lounge.
As expressions of sympathy in lieu of flowers, donations in Allen’s memory to the Guelph General Hospital Foundation or the Ontario Veterinary College’s Pet Trust would be appreciated by the family.
