He left this world peacefully, surrounded by the love of his family, just the way he lived his life.
Barrie was born on June 23, 1942, and spent his 83 years building a life full of laughter, generosity, and quiet strength. He was predeceased by his first wife, Carolyn, and two brothers in England. He is survived by his devoted wife Dale, who was his partner, caregiver, and best friend.
Barrie was a proud and loving father to Derek (Linda), Alan (Lisa), and Kerry (John), and a cherished stepfather to Jason (Nadia) and Jeff (Lisa). His greatest joy came from being Grandpa to his grandchildren: Jennifer (and her daughter Lily), Stephanie (Mike, and their children Gracie and Rowan), Justin, Cody, Nicole, Alex, Jaina, Mason, Patrick, and Maggie. Each of them brought a sparkle to his eye and a smile to his face.
Barrie had a deep love for the simple pleasures in life. He was happiest while on the baseball diamond, his toes in the sand, and his family nearby. He had a gift for making people feel at home; whether it was through a warm conversation, a shared laugh, or his uncanny ability to fix just about anything. If there was a painting project to be done, Barrie was already there, brush in hand, ready to help. He never needed to be asked; he just showed up, because that’s who he was. His preferred payment was any baked goods, especially banana bread.
He was the kind of man who made life better just by being in it. His quiet wisdom, steady presence, and endless willingness to lend a hand will be missed more than words can say.
Our family would like to extend heartfelt thanks to the compassionate teams at Grand River Hospital, the Grand River Cancer Centre, and Wellington Hospice. Their care and kindness meant the world to Barrie and to all of us.
Barrie’s legacy is one of love, laughter, and service. He leaves behind a family who adored him, countless walls perfectly painted, and a lifetime of memories that will never fade.
Visitation will be held on Tuesday September 2, 2025 at Gilbert MacIntyre and Son Hart Chapel, from 4pm to 7pm.
Family and friends are warmly invited to join in a Celebration of Barrie’s Life that will be held at a later date.
In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions to Hospice Wellington or the Waterloo Regional Health Network (WRHN) Foundation, in gratitude for their compassionate care would be appreciated.
