It is with deep sorrow that we announce the passing of Donato Tonto, beloved husband, father, brother and nonno. Donato left us peacefully on July 17th, surrounded by his loving family. He was born in Baragiano, Provincia di Basilicata Italy, son of Antonietta Russo and Giuseppe Tonto.
His three grandsons were his most treasured joy. He loved to play with them, and he would go to great lengths to make them laugh and smile. Donato leaves behind his devoted and loving wife Gilda (Stolfi), his children Antonella (Shawn), Daniela (Brad) and Fabio (Clover). He leaves behind his adored grandsons Nicolas, Adam and Giuseppe as well as his devoted sister Rose Tonto. He will be greatly missed by his loving family and extended family.
Donato lived a life full of love, laughter and pride for his family. As a hard-working husband, he strived to provide the best for his family. He took pleasure in organizing bocce tournaments, picnics and in being surrounded by friends and family over a big meal. He took great satisfaction in making his own wine and tending to his garden. Donato was an enthusiastic Formula 1, soccer and hockey fan. He loved cheering for Ferrari, Napoli, Italy in the World Cup and the Canadiens. Donato was fiercely proud of his Italian heritage and traditions. He was always eager to help others. Donato did not hesitate to be generous with friends and family.
Although Donato lost the ability to communicate, he never lost his ability to wink, smile and he found a way express his outgoing personality. He loved being the center of attention and pleasing those around him.
We would like to extend our gratitude to all of the PSWs who helped Donato at home. We would also like to express our most heartfelt gratitude to the staff, residents and their families at The St. Joseph’s Health Center Long Term Care, Linden Court and Cherrywood neighbourhoods. The tender care, kindness, compassion and respect that was provided for Donato in the last six months was appreciated beyond measure. The people we met felt like family and we were always at ease knowing that papa was in their care.
