She passed away in Guelph, in her 90th year, with her family by her side.
Elizabeth (Liz) was married for sixty years to her devoted husband, John James McEachern (deceased August 2024), and was a loving mother to Ann (Tim), Mary (Mike), Jim (Sara), and Janet (Patrick). She was a cherished grandmother to Josh (Jenn), Brianna (Travis), Stephen, William, Emily and Lisa (Adam), and a proud great-grandmother to Lylah, Bentley, Maverick and Colby. She was also an honorary mother to Patty (Jim) and Jenny. Elizabeth will be deeply missed by her many beloved nieces and nephews, cousins, and step-grandchildren, all of whom held a special place in her heart.
She is survived by her sister Mary (Gary), her brother Robert (Julie, deceased), and her sister-in-law Colleen. Elizabeth was predeceased by her sisters, Helen and Margaret, and by her parents, Helen and Robert Gordon.
Elizabeth was born in Seagrave, Ontario, and grew up in Cresswell. As a child, she lived and worked on her family farm, helped run the family store, and attended Ramsey School and Lindsay School. In 1958 she graduated from the School of Nursing at the Toronto General Hospital. After graduation her adventures took her to Calgary (where she met the love of her life), New Brunswick and eventually to Guelph.
After settling in Guelph, Elizabeth raised four children and was a registered nurse at the Guelph General Hospital for more than 30 years. She was a member of Holy Rosary Parish for 50 years and was a generous donor to many Christian and children’s charities. Elizabeth was deeply involved in the Guiding community for more than 40 years, sharing her love of camping, crafts, cooking, and life skills. She touched the lives of countless girls and young women, forming lifelong friendships with fellow Guiders and retelling those memories with joy throughout her life.
In her later years, Elizabeth was actively involved in raising her grandchildren. She enjoyed playing bridge, euchre and cribbage, with Friday night cards with the McConnells being a highlight of the week. Elizabeth never missed a Toronto Blue Jays game or a women's curling bonspiel.
Elizabeth could never tolerate idle hands, and her love of knitting kept them constantly in motion. Through her endless creations, she warmed the hands, feet, and necks of those she loved and even those she barely knew. If you were fortunate enough to receive one of her handmade pieces, you received a true gift of love.
Elizabeth lived a frugal but rich life in service to others. Her generous spirit has been woven into the lives of those she touched and will continue to live on through them. She will be forever missed.
Elizabeth’s family would like to extend our heartfelt gratitude to her dear friends: Patty, Arlene, Sharen, Susan P., Susan B., Vivian and Michelle and all who checked in on her regularly. In her challenging final year Elizabeth was welcomed to the community at Riverside Glen. The residents and staff showed her deep compassion and grace.
The Family will receive their friends at the Gilbert MacIntyre & Son Funeral Home, Dublin Chapel, 252 Dublin St. N., Guelph on Friday, December 5, 2025 from 2-4 and 6-8 p.m. A Funeral Mass will be held at Holy Rosary Church 175 Emma St., Guelph on Saturday, December 6, 2025 at 10:30 a.m. Interment at Marymount Cemetery, Guelph.
In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to Girl Guides of Canada or the Guelph General Hospital Foundation. The family wishes to thank everyone for their love and support during this time.
