Born and raised in Guelph, James was a brilliant light – warm-hearted, curious, and always thinking of others. He was the kind of person who knew a little bit about everything and a whole lot about the things he loved. He had a passion for history, science, and sports – and had an incredible skill of remembering any fact, statistic, or bit of information he came across. His family lovingly referred to him as a walking encyclopedia. Every Christmas growing up, his parents gifted him the newest Guinness Book of World Records – and without a doubt, he would finish it cover to cover within just a few days. If he found a fact he thought someone would like, he wouldn’t hesitate to share it. James also had a love for exploring. He could spend hours biking across trails and through the city, going wherever his bike took him was an adventure that was entirely his own.
James had a bold personality, filling every room with his energy and humour. When he wasn’t deep diving into a new topic, he found comfort in the worlds of video games and anime, spending hours immersing himself in stories, strategy, and online laughter with his best friends from across the world. Gaming brought him comfort and genuine connection in a world where it was hard to find.
James spent his life working as a cook, a job that his dad introduced him to and fit him in all the right ways. He had a natural skill in the kitchen, and his food was always made with intention and love – his spaghetti sauce was always something his family could count on to fill them with warmth. His sense of humour, his booming laughter, and his quick wit could light up even the busiest shift. His laughter carried – sometimes literally through the walls – and brought people together, even in the hard times. He was a loving brother who was always there when it really mattered – offering comfort, sarcasm, or a well-timed joke.
James leaves behind his father Sean, mother Heather, brother Elijah (Melanie), sisters Elizabeth and Jessica (Michaela), and his nephew Bennett.
He is predeceased by his grandparents, Elizabeth and Rev. Gerry Ring, and Elizabeth and Carman Norris. He is also predeceased by his loving Auntie Andrea. James will be lovingly remembered by many aunts, uncles, cousins, and friends who will miss him more than words can say.
His loss is indescribable. The world is quieter without his voice and laughter, and the space he held in our lives feels painfully empty. But the love he gave and the memories we shared will live on in all of us.
Visitation will be held on Sunday, April 27th from 2:00 to 6:00 p.m. at Gilbert MacIntyre & Son Funeral Home (1099 Gordon St, Guelph, ON N1G 4X9).
A service to celebrate James’s life will take place at the same location on Monday, April 28th at 11:00 a.m., with a reception to follow. The service will be live streamed for all those that are unable to make it.
In honour of James’s memory, donations can be made to the Canadian Mental Health Association.
The family would like to offer heartfelt thanks to Guelph EMS, Guelph Fire, and the nurses and doctors in the Guelph General ER for their care and compassion. Their efforts and kindness in trying to keep James with us will never be forgotten.
James, you were so deeply loved. Your light, your mind, and your heart will never be forgotten.
Run Jamesy, Run.
