Julia was a devoted wife to Ryerson Nicklin for over 61 years, and a loving mother to Shelley Jacobson Nicklin (husband Peter Jacobson) and the late Linda Lutz, and Denise Barnett. She was an extremely proud grandmother to Nathaniel, Michael, and Julianne, and a great-grandmother to Robin and Brandon. She was a beloved sister to Amelia Calhoun and was predeceased by several siblings.
Born and raised in London, England, Julia served in the land army during the Second World War and worked as a conductor on the double-decker buses while the men were off fighting the war. In 1957, Julia crossed the Atlantic Ocean on the MS Batory Ocean Liner, and she met her soon-to-be husband, Ryerson Nicklin, while working at Potter and Brumfield.
After devoting her life to raising her children, Julia found her passion in dance and joined and performed with the Evergreen Footlight Dance Group for over 20 years. Her most prestigious performance was held at the RBC Seniors Jubilee where she performed on stage at Roy Thompson Hall.
When people asked Julia what she attributed her youthful looks and extraordinary fitness to, Julia would always reply with a smile, “Hard work and aggravation.”
Her feisty and energetic spirit and sense of humour will be greatly missed by all who knew her.
We would like to extend our heartfelt thank you to Julia’s closest friends and relatives who meant the world to her: Barbara, Sophia, Linda, Bev, Tina and Karen.
We would also like to extend our special thanks to the doctors and nurses of the Guelph General Hospital who took such special care of her.
Friends and family will be invited to attend a celebration of life at a date to be determined.
In lieu of flowers, donations to the Canadian Cancer Society would be greatly appreciated. Donations and condolences can be made online at www.gilbertmacintyreandson.com
