Larry was born in Gardenton, Manitoba to Mike (Manolo) and Sadie (Tzia Samborski) Zahara and moved to Windsor, Ontario with his family as a child. He joined the Ontario Provincial Police at the age of twenty-one. His career continued in Toronto with the Liquor Licence Board of Ontario, retiring in 1985 from the Ontario Fire Marshall’s Office.
In 1956 he married Agnes Caza of Windsor and had four children; Paul (Pauline), Adele, Allan (Paula) and Michelle, six grandchildren; Jeremy Schertzer, Jennifer (Zahara) Ryan, Christopher, Timothy and Matthew Zahara and Daniel Jeffery, and six surviving great-grandchildren.
He and Anne Marie (Campbell/Pharris) were married in 1997 and resided in Brighton and Guelph, Ontario and enjoyed a long retirement together, traveling, playing golf and bridge.
Larry was pre-deceased by his first wife Agnes, brothers Taras, Morris and John Kosowan, daughter Michelle and great-granddaughter Lolo Ryan.
