

Michael “The Hawk” Gaida, 70, of Rockwood, Ontario, passed away peacefully on June 23, 2024, after years of declining health, surrounded by his loving family. Born on October 27, 1953, in Niagara-on-the-Lake, Ontario, Michael lived a life full of love, laughter, and dedication to his family and community.
Michael attended Conestoga College, where he received his education. He went on to have a fulfilling career as a telephone installer at Bell Canada. Known for his hard work and dedication, Michael was a beloved colleague and friend.
Michael’s passions extended far beyond his career. He was an avid fisherman and a long-standing original member of the Trident Fishing Club, where he spent over 46 years enjoying the sport he loved. He had a great passion for traveling, baking, and entertaining friends and family. His hobbies also included singing in the Ukrainian Choir and dancing, activities that showcased his deep connection to his Ukrainian heritage. Additionally, Michael enjoyed snowmobiling and took many long trips to Northern Ontario, relishing the adventure and camaraderie of these excursions.
Michael was deeply involved in the Ukrainian community, particularly in St. Catharines, where he was very active in the Ukrainian Youth Association (CYM) during his younger years. His commitment to his culture and heritage was a significant part of his life.
Michael’s social nature was well-known to all who met him. He had a unique gift for making connections and could often be found chatting with friends and acquaintances wherever he went. His gatherings were filled with warmth, conversation, and delicious meals.
Michael is survived by his dedicated wife of 44 years, Sophie Gaida (Sadiwnyk). He will be missed dearly by his son John Gaida and daughter in law Jennifer Hillier, as well as his grandsons Malachy and August. Michael will also be missed by his brother in law Randy Ritchie and sister in law Cathy Sadiwnyk (Walaga) as well as nieces and nephews, Trisha (Ritchie) and her husband Greg Floris, Josh Ritchie, Zenon Borys and his wife Geremy, and Sonya (Borys) and her husband Vinicius Aboin. He is also survived by his extended family in Rochester, New York, including John and Myrosha Borys, with whom he was very close, as well as family in Kirkland Lake, Ontario, Saskatchewan, and Alberta. Michael will also be missed by his loving dog, Kvitka.
Michael is predeceased by his parents, Nicholas and Margaret Gaida, his brother Steve Gaida, and his sister Alicia Ritchie (Gaida).
His love for his wife Sophie was evident in every dance they shared, particularly to their favorite song, “Spanish Eyes” by Engelbert Humperdinck. Their bond was a beautiful testament to their enduring love and partnership.
Visitation will occur on Friday, June 28th from 6pm to 8pm, with a Panachyda at 7:30pm at Gilbert MacIntyre & Son Funeral Home in Guelph. Divine Liturgy will be held on Saturday, June 29th at 10am at Holy Protection of the Mother of God Ukrainian Catholic Church in Guelph. Burial will be at 12:30pm at St. Volodymyr Cultural Centre in Oakville. A Celebration of Life Reception will be held following the burial at 2:30pm back at the Holy Protection of the Mother of God Ukrainian Catholic Church in Guelph.
In lieu of flowers, the family requests that donations be made to The Kidney Foundation of Canada or Canada Ukraine Surgical Aid Program.
