Healy, Adele Agnes - 95, Halifax, passed away on September 2, 2013, at Shannex Parkstone. Born in Halifax, Adele was the daughter of the late Richard and Adele (Babin) Flinn. She was a devout catholic and member of Saint Thomas Aquinas Parish for over 75 years. She was an active member of the CWL and volunteered in many capacities over the years.
Adele was known for her warm, sparkling personality and positive attitude. She had a great zest for life that she brought to every family gathering and every task at hand.
In her younger years she worked as a clerk for her brother Jeff, a Magistrate in the Provincial Court. She led a large secretarial pool of typists for the Royal Canadian Air Force during the Second World War, and later became executive assistant to the Regional Manager of DuPont Canada. She was talented with her hands and developed skills in many handicrafts including silver work, leather work, furniture refinishing, tole painting, and furniture making.
Adele was introduced to her future husband, George Healy, by her brothers at a New Year’s Eve event, sparking a whirlwind courtship and marriage the following summer. Once married, she happily took on the role of wife and mother. She was a night hawk, and could be frequently found in the kitchen baking her famous chocolate chip cookies at 2:00 a.m. She had many memorable times at Springfield Lake over 70 years, tagging along after her big brothers enjoying the “Camp Crowd” on the island, and later many happy summers at the cottage, surrounded by family. She loved to travel, enjoyed winter trips to Sarasota with George, and later, travelled to many destinations with friends and niece Marguerite. One of her special loves was her Bridge Club with cherished friends for over 65 years. She enjoyed her role as central figure in the extended Flinn family, staying in touch with her many nieces and nephews, who supported “Aunt Deli” in her later years. She was an expert in social networking long before the term became popular. She will be greatly missed.
She is survived by sons, Michael (Susan), Peter (Helen) and grandchildren, Kathleen, Sarah, Erin, Brendan, and Noah. She is also survived by sister-in-law Margaret Flinn, and many nieces and nephews. She was the last surviving member of her immediate family. She was predeceased by her loving husband George in 1990; sister, Mary; brothers, Frank, Jeffrey, John, Cyril, Harold, Nicholas, Leo, and George.
The family wishes to thank her longtime live in care givers, Sandie Belair and Marion Hynes, who provided exceptional care, and became close friends, and the staff of Mount Lane at Shannex Parkstone, who provided loving care over the last three years.
Visitation will be 2-4 p.m. and 7-9 p.m. Thursday in J. A. Snow Funeral Home, 339 Lacewood Dr., Halifax. Funeral mass will be celebrated by Rev. Owen Connelly, 1 p.m. Friday, Sept. 6, in Saint Thomas Aquinas Church, Oxford Street, Halifax. Burial will be in Gate of Heaven Cemetery. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the Heart and Stroke Foundation of Nova Scotia, or a charity of your choice.
