I am sorry to say that I lost the love of my life at 10:45pm on March 5, 2026 at the V.G Hospital. Aileen had asked me to post her message.
Dear Family & Friends,
As you and I know, if you are reading this, then my journey through life is over. It was a life with ups and downs. I tend to cherish the good times and not dwell on the bad but to learn from it all. I like to think that through it all, “I did it my way” and I hope that I’m on my way to meet with my loved ones who had gone before me.
My journey began on May 16, 1946 in Saint John, N.B. At the age of four months with my parents to Wellesley Hills, Mass. Then at the age of 7, we travelled to La Mesa, California where after my fathers passing there, my mother and I returned to Canada and Lunenburg, N.S; where we took up residence.
My death was preceded by those of my parents, Hartley E. Mitchell and Margaret A. Mitchell (Daniels) while I am survived by my husband Shane Halliday, my daughter Bonnie Richardson (Ottawa, Ont.) & my son Gregg Richardson, (Bridgewater, N.S)
In June, 1975, I joined the Halifax City Police as the first female Constable (previously they had police women who worked as secretaries or searching female prisoners).Through my 30 years on the job, I held a lot of positions including walking the beat, working a radio car, Mounted Division, Traffic section as an accident investigator, Major Crime, Drug Unit, and Vice Unit to name a few.
But the proudest moment was when my son, Gregg followed in my footsteps and joined the Halifax City Police. We were the first mother and son team serving at the same time in HPD history. I retired in August 2005.
Retirement has been rewarding except for a few ailments. Travel was a big part of it in the beginning but later we just took it easy, enjoying the life that we had built together.
To my beautiful family, I’ll love you past and forever and carry you in my heart. You have given me the greatest joys in life, and I am so proud of all of you. Remember I’ll never be far away.
As was my wishes, cremation will take place with a closed private interment.
