It is with great sadness the family of Albert Green, announce his passing at the age of 97 on Saturday, February 5, at the Camphill Veterans Memorial Long-term care facility in Halifax, following a brief illness.
Born in Burgeo, Newfoundland, in November 1924, Albert was a loving, devoted husband, brother, and uncle. He was the son of the late George and Bertha (Strickland) Green of Burgeo, Newfoundland.
Albert was a fisherman on Newfoundland fishing schooners at a very early age. Albert sold bait fish to the original Bluenose. The Bluenose remained a passion for Albert throughout his adult life. Albert was a veteran of the Second World War and proudly served with the Merchant Navy. In the early 1970’s Albert decided to hang up his sea hat and take on a land-based role directly across from his North end home in Halifax. For 17 years Albert served as the loved care taker at St. Stephen’s school. Despite being retired for 32 years, past students and teachers vividly recall the love and kindness Albert exuded towards the many teachers and students over the many years caring for the school. Albert touched the hearts of all of those individuals he interacted with.
He was a faithful member Saint Margaret of Scotland Anglican Church, Halifax.
Albert loved working with his hands and used his talent to design and build from scrap wood several “Bluenose” replicas which can be found in homes from Nova Scotia to Ontario and maybe beyond.
His many nieces and nephews greatly enjoyed many of his heroic stories of his adventures while serving in the Merchant Navy.
Albert is survived by his wife of 74 years, Azelma (Vardy) Green and many nieces and nephews. Albert was a loved great, great and more recently a great, great, great uncle to many nieces and nephews. Albert would wait with great anticipation for their visits and always lovingly had his arms extended to greet the children.
Albert was predeceased by brothers Lewis, Seward, Gordon, Maxwell, Frederick, Cecil and George Green.
Special thanks to all of the doctors, nurses, and caregivers that have compassionately supported Albert over the past few years.
