It is with much sadness and broken hearts that we the family of Albert C. Sweetland announce his passing on January 27, 2021 at the age of 79. Born in Port Union Newfoundland on July 1st, 1941 to parents Millie and Arthur Sweetland. Dad as a boy enjoyed tippying ice pans, playing hockey, and getting into a little bit of mischief from time to time. He eventually went on to become a welder and moved to Halifax in 1965. Although he loved Halifax, his heart was always in Newfoundland. He worked for Purdy Brothers in his early career and eventually moved on and retired from Nova Scotia Power after 25 years of service, where he made many life-long friends. Dad was a member of St. John’s Anglican Church for over 50 years, he also volunteered at the Ecumenical Food Bank in which he made many lasting friendships.
He is survived by his loving wife of 56 years Edith, daughters Carolyn and Kim, Grandchildren Carly, and Tyler, who were his absolute pride and joy. Affectionately known as Poppy/Popeye he was always involved in their lives, going to hockey, baseball, swimming, and karate whatever the kids were involved in, Dad was their #1 Fan. Also survived by sister Pauline, brother Bruce and sister in law Joan, niece Evelyn and nephews Shawn, Jason, and Shannon. As well as sister in law Eileen who visited once a week on Sunday in which he would jokingly say “You again?” Also surviving is his mother in law Elizabeth Abbott of Newfoundland.
Predeceased by his parents, father in law Joseph, brother in law Jack, Sister in law Lorna, Brother in law Kens, niece Karen and brother in law Bernard.
We will miss your sense of humour; we will miss everything about you. You are forever loved, till we meet again, Mookuluku.
Cremation has taken place; a Celebration of Dads life will take place at a later date both in Halifax and in Newfoundland.
Donations in Dad’s memory can be made to the Heart and Stroke Foundation, Diabetes Canada, or your local Food Bank.
Special thanks to the nurses on 6.2 at the Halifax Infirmary and to the doctors involved in dad's care. Also, a big thank you to the heart function clinic and their staff.
