So sorry to hear of Al's passing. We have many fond memories of Saturday morning ball  games at The Halifax Commons and the fun times enjoyed afterwards at The Old Halifax. Sharing a photo of good times at the cabin in Ketch Harbour.  Shane & Annette Kelly. 

I am so very sad to hear this news, Allen was a lovely man and always such a Gentleman.  My condolences to all his family, especially his beautiful wife Joan.  RIP  Allen.

My sincere condolences to  Allen’s family but especially to his brother Ron.  I hope I am correct in assuming that Ron Beed is the same Ron I worked with at Enterprise at the airport. To you Ron, I’m sorry for the loss of your brother. If this is not the Ron Beed I know, please accept my apologies for making that assumption. My condolences are still as sincere to all the family. 

Al was a great guy. I played ball with him on the Commons in the 70s.
I  am quite a bit younger than Al so he was one of those guys I always respected and looked up to. He was a real gentleman type athlete. Rest in piece Al.

Uncle Allen, you have always been adored by me and my family. I have such beautiful memories of you and Aunt Joan from childhood, especially the time both families camped together in side by side cottages. Love, fun and auntie and my mom dancing are memories we share. I just know in my heart that my mom and dad are embracing you again in spirit, you were always such a good friend and brother-in law to them and always a  favourite uncle to me. Rest in Peace, with eternal love, your niece Deanna

RIP  Allen my friend and fellow worker from the Dockyard days Always there To lend a hand. Remembering sharing a beer or two at Jenny‘s with lunch of course and the funny tricks you would do at the table which I never could figure out how to do. Remembering  driving you home on the back of my motorcycle from work wasn’t very far to go but hilarious. My deepest sympathies to Joan and family. 

Part Two:  At one point in time in my younger years, my best friend and I got into doing word puzzles too, and we began calling Grandad weekly to recruit his help. We’d get the easy answers ourselves, then I’d call Grandad and he’d walk us through the rest. He’d give us the answers, but also explain them. He was so kind, and seemed to enjoy those phone calls as much as I did. He never seemed too busy to be bothered, instead, he always took the time to share his knowledge and teach me something new. He always gave his time and effort to help the people he loved, without hesitation. Even if it was something as small as providing answers to newspaper puzzles. He was like that with everyone he loved. 

“Exemplary (adjective): Being honourable or admirable; deserving of imitation because of excellence; praiseworthy, an example of the right way to be; exemplary people excel at what they do and are excellent examples to others of how to be.” He was the best of the best, a true definition of what it means to be an amazing Grandad. And for that, I’m grateful and lucky to have had him as mine.

Cheers with a Keith’s beer — to a person that showed unconditional love to his family, compassion to strangers, and just an all-around good man. To an authentic person with a heart of gold, someone that impacted the lives of everyone around him for the better. To an exemplary Grandad, gone but never forgotten. I love you, forever and always. 


PART 1: In Memory of an Exemplary Grandfather, 

You are dearly missed, loved, and will never be forgotten. Everyone who had the pleasure of being loved by you will cherish your memory in their hearts & minds forever.

In recent years, some of my favourite memories with Grandad were just the little moments, laughing with him and Nanny especially. We’d sit in the living room watching tv, and whenever Nanny would do or say something funny as she often does, we’d both just be belly-laughing and enjoying the moment. He laughed at her in a way that you could tell he loved her, quirks and all. One of the many examples of this dynamic was on a beautiful October day at the camp. I was snapping some fall photos of Nanny in the leaves with a pumpkin in front of the lake. As she spontaneously decided to begin rolling around in the pile of leaves, I glanced up to the porch to see Grandad sitting in his chair, laughing and gently shaking his head as he watched her having fun. He laughed at her out of love, not judgement. Even after being married for decades, Grandad and Nanny always knew how to make each other laugh and that never changed. It’s a beautiful thing to see your grandparents still in love after so many years. 

One distinct childhood memory I have is that Grandad was really knowledgeable with words. From a young age, I remember recognizing and admiring that about him. He was like a walking dictionary. Say you uncovered a word you’d never heard before. If you asked him about it, he’d spell it for you, tell you what it meant, and explain how to use it in writing. He was truly a wordsmith in that way. He loved to do word puzzles, and was exceptionally good at them. He’d sit at the end of the couch with one leg crossed, holding his blue pen and a newspaper, with a small stack of his already completed expert-level crosswords sitting on his end table. I can still perfectly picture his curvy capital handwriting in blue ink. 

Rip Allen. I thought of you as the greatest person I ever knew.i thought of you as the father I never really had .when I lived with my mom on lynch st you gave me the money to buy a mini bike .and I will never forget you took me on a hunting trip with your buddy .I always felt part of yours and of course Joan's life and you were so accepting of me .I remember so well visiting you and Joan a couple of times in Florida. Also the times you visited my family in Montreal. You will surely be missed Allen.you will never be out of my thoughts 😔

Like the sun has to set eventually, we all had to say goodbye to the strongest man we all knew.Its almost like you forget this day will ever come and a life will end.For me,there are not words,photos or memories that and even express or explain how great of a man my grandad was.He truly touched everyone he came across in his 85 years of life ,you don't realize the impact you have on people with just who you are and what youve done.With his hands he worked hard for his family all his life but also built a camp for his wife,children ,grandchildren and to this day even great grandchildren have been able to enjoy it!His caring eyes that gazed into the love of his life eyes until his last days were also the eyes that lit up whenever his grandchildren ran in from the pool for dinner at their condo!The arms that held his family together were also the arms thats were always open ready to give up the tightest hug when he greeted us or said goodbye as we went back home for the summer.I can still hear his happy high-pitched voice when his late dog entered a room "Hey,there's my buddy boy!"The summers I spent with my grandparents have truly shaped me into the person I am today and for that I am thankful! To me its the feelings he gave me that will always remain in my heart.For now I won't say good bye but see you later grandad ,I hope you are up there on heavens veranda ,an ice cold beer in one hand and buddy boy in the other watching over us all. You will never be forgotten! Ps "YOUR FULL OF OLD ROPE!"
