The end of the year 2020 brought heartbreak to those of us who loved André MacInnis, taken far too early due to post-surgical complications. Those in his closest circle are devastated by his sudden passing. His beloved ‘other half,’ Alexandria and his fur baby and constant companion Mac greatly appreciate the support of family and friends at this time. His parents, Kenneth and Paule (Charbonneau) MacInnis, sister Suzanne and husband Doug, brother Peter and wife Magda, all in Ottawa, are mourning his passing and the distance that prevents a gathering in his memory. André was a private man, and his wish for cremation and a private memorial will be honoured when his family can come together to celebrate the true gentleman he was.
André was known as the gentle giant; at 6’8 he cut an imposing figure, but his shoe size was far surpassed by the size of his heart. He loved children and was a loving and attentive uncle to his nieces Caitlin and Maya and nephew Liam, staying connected through Snapchat and text as they grew older. He loved them very much, and always looked forward to visiting with them.
André’s ‘brother from another mother,’ Chris Lineker and his wife, Tina, remember him with love as the kind of man who was unfailingly loyal, and always had his friends’ backs. He loved his friends and family deeply. He took great joy in knowing all the right buttons to push to get them riled up! Chris said when André looked at you with his lopsided grin and big brown eyes, you knew he had a zinger coming your way. Their decades of friendship meant the world to both men, and André counted time spent with Chris and Tina among his favourite moments.
When André met Alexandria, he and Mac knew they had something special. They quickly became a tight-knit family, sharing a love that was deep and abiding. Whether running Mac at a nearby field or swimming at every beach they could find, or jumping in the car for an impromptu adventure, André and Alex had fun together. Driving through Montreal to Ottawa or Red Point, PEI to visit family, taking Mac around the Cabot Trail, being amazed at the spectacular sight of whales breaching from the deck of a tour boat, they found joy in simple pleasures and rarely sat home doing nothing! They were always on the go with Mac, enjoying him and each other, the way that families do. André and Alex exchanged rings as a sign of their commitment to one another and their partnership, but how they cared for each other was the only sign their friends and family needed to understand the importance of their relationship.
When André became part of their household, he and Alex’s dad, Reg, formed a strong bond. They supported each other and cared for one another, each helping the other when the need arose. They would side together in teasing Alex; their home together was a happy one, full of laughter, caring and kindness. André appreciated Reg’s support, knowing it was not easy to share his only daughter. André proved he was worthy of the trust Reg had in him to care for Alex, every day.
No one who cared for André will forget him. He treated everyone with respect and kindness and asked only that for himself. He could not abide bullies and would not tolerate them. He was an incredibly patient man, a true gentleman with impeccable manners. He took pleasure in simple things: clean cars, the sight of the ocean and the water crashing on the shore, car dancing to his favourite 80’s music, homemade cookies, long Nibs licorice, his daily fix of yogurt, bananas and chocolate milk. His daily gym visits were a ritual for him, and an inspiration to those who knew him.
He was a caretaker, someone who ensured those around him were well cared for - especially his Mac! André’s love for animals and their wellbeing were a hallmark of his character; to honour this, in lieu of flowers donations can be made to Canadian Intervention and Assistance Dogs (CIAD). He would be pleased to know that donations in his name would help those suffering from PTSD find comfort and solace in a therapy dog. He will be missed every day by those who love him.

L'océan et les plages de l' Ile du Prince-Edouard représentaient pour lui un oasis paisible , chaleureux . Red Point était son endroit préféré pour les vacances.
