With heavy hearts, we announce the peaceful passing of Andrew Henry Hare, beloved husband, father, and grandfather, on Saturday, March 7, 2026, at his home overlooking Hubbards Cove. Born October 26, 1947, in Kingston, Ontario, Andy was the son of the late Elbert (Ebby) and O. Kathryn (Kay) Hare.
As a young boy in Kingston, Andy was an enthusiastic athlete, playing both baseball and hockey in the St. John’s Anglican Church Athletic League. After completing his early education at Rideau School & Loyalist Collegiate, he moved to Halifax, Nova Scotia, to attend the Dalhousie and University of King’s College. While studying there, he met the love of his life and soulmate, Anne Dorey.
Following his graduation from King’s, Andy returned to Kingston and Anne soon joined him while continuing her education at Queen’s University. They began their life together there, building their first home and welcoming their daughter Allyson in 1975. Just one month after her birth, they packed up their young family and moved to Hubbards, Nova Scotia, where they built their home on the cove and welcomed two more children, JoAnne and Steven.
Andy began his career with Barrow Nicoll & Co. and earned his Chartered Accountant designation in 1978. He spent the rest of his career with the Provincial Government in Economic Development until his retirement in 2009.
A devoted community servant, Andy volunteered tirelessly throughout his life. He was often on stage hosting the local Variety Show, auctions and fundraisers and performing with the Hubbards Heritage Dinner Theatre, doing it all with ease and humour. He served on numerous boards, including the South Shore Recreation Association, King’s College Alumni Association, Aspotogan Heritage Trust, Parish of St. Luke’s Cemetery Committee, the Chester Curling Club, and the Chester Golf Club. His longest and most dedicated service was to St. Luke’s Parish in Hubbards, where he handled the financials for over forty years. As Trust Advisor for the J.D. Shatford Memorial Trust Fund, Andy helped ensure that local students and community organizations received support from this cherished local legacy. His selflessness, reliability, and commitment to his community will be missed.
Andy was also involved in Junior Achievement, singing in the church choir, participating in the lip sync competitions, coaching minor hockey teams, and enjoyed playing baseball and hockey on local teams throughout the years. He completed countless income tax returns for locals and family.
In 2009, Andy bravely faced a diagnosis of a brain tumour. Grateful for a favorable outcome following his brain tumour surgery, he continued to enjoy life’s moments—attending events, spending treasured time with his grandchildren, and following their many activities. With the help of devoted friends who drove him to gatherings and games, he remained active in curling, golfing, and social activities he loved. Andy also spent ten years supporting the Brain Tumour Foundation participating in the annual Halifax Spring Sprints with Team Hare Brains.
Andy will be sincerely missed by his devoted wife of 54 years, Anne (Dorey); daughters Allyson (Shannon) McKinnon of Queensland and JoAnne Hare (David Millar), and son Steven (Sarah) Hare, all of Hubbards. He took tremendous pride in his grandchildren: Christina, Mitchell, and Iyla McKinnon; Ava and Caleb Millar; and Ebbi and Bonnie Hare. He is also survived by his sister, Jane Cunningham of Kingston, ON; his brother, Jim Hare (Barbara Rivett) of Pickering, ON; and nieces and nephews Mike, Darren, Jorden, Sarah and Nigel. Andy was blessed to have spent meaningful time with all of them during recent visits.
He was predeceased by his parents; in-laws Albert & Esther Dorey, brother in law, Glenn Dorey and sister-in-law, Christine Dorey.
The Hare Family extends heartfelt thanks to their friends, and community members for their overwhelming love and support. They are also deeply grateful to Jessica Boudreau, the Northwood Healthcare workers and the Palliative Care Home Team for their compassionate care and guidance.
Andy will be lovingly remembered for his steadfast devotion to family, his generous community spirit, and his quiet, genuine kindness.
“There is no limit to the amount of good a person can do if they don’t care who gets the credit.” Warren Miller
