Dr. Ashford Clinton Sherbourne Browne, a son of Antigua and Trinidad, passed away peacefully in his sleep June 11, 2022 at age 92 at the Halifax Infirmary after a life of defying the odds and exceeding expectations…until the very end.
Clinton is remembered by Joan Browne, his loving wife - and the love of his life for 64 years, sons Robin, Derek, Colin and Clinford, grandsons Jaedon, Kasai and CJ, his best friends of countless years, Dr. Frank Knight and Karolyn Waterson and countless friends and families in the many places he called home.
Clinton grew up poor in Trinidad but went on to enrich the world as a teacher and a physician. Along the way, he taught at the elementary, primary, secondary and university levels, including teaching at his own high school right after he graduated - at age 17. He also worked briefly as a train porter while he was a medical student but stopped after learning that porters’ had to shine passengers’ shoes. He would go on to find his own ways to bring a shine to the world.
Clinton held a Bachelor of Science with a major in mathematics, a Masters in Mathematics, a Bachelor of Education and an MD, the last of which he finished at age 40. He was very intelligent with a wry sense of humor that put smiles on the faces of those around him until the very end of his life.
Clinton’s physical heart may have failed him in Halifax but, wherever he went, his mind's heart, his soul's heart, his heart's heart never failed to beat for all humanity, embracing each of us in profoundly respectful, active caring, showing how to walk such a path.
The family profoundly thanks the staff at floor 6.2 of the Halifax Infirmary for their excellent, compassionate care they provided Clinton until the very end.
