Young, Barrie Stephen, age 55 of Halifax passed away September 4, 2013 at home. Born in Halifax, the son of Donald and Marjorie Young. Barrie loved music and was quite an accomplished guitar man, playing lead guitar in the bands Riser, Sequel and the Persuaders. He would sit for hours listening to a song over and over until he had perfected it. He made playing the guitar look so effortless and many people were in awe of his ability to do so. He even tried his hand at singing which he did very well. He enjoyed sports, in particular, NASCAR and football. His favorite driver was Mark Martin and he would get teased to pick a younger driver that would be able to be competitive and win some races; all we got in return was Barrie’s trademark smile. His other favorite sport was football and to say he was an avid loyal fan of the Washington Redskins would be an understatement. He has the hats, the jersey, and the shirt. He never missed a Redskins game and even got Judy interested so they could watch the games together. In addition to his family, his other pride and joy was his beloved Mustang. He named her the Black Beauty and loved that car. She is a fine looking vehicle with him waxing and cleaning her so much he may have worn the paint off. Barrie also loved to bake and cook making the best peanut butter brittle ever; in fact, he was a baker at Sobeys and Tim Horton’s and later worked at Maritime Beauty. Through his battle Barrie kept his positive attitude, never complained even on the toughest of days and never lost his sense of humor. He would come out with the funniest things when you least expected and show that trademark grin and smile; this is what carried him and the family through. Barrie is survived by his soul mate of 20 years, Judy Josey; father, Donald, sisters Darlene, Sharon (William Westhaver); brothers Jimmie (Margo), Phillip (Joanne) and 7 nieces and nephews; Ernest, Cory, Anthony, Kylie, Kelsey, Shelby & Justin. He was predeceased by his mother Marjorie. Funeral services will be held Monday, September 9th at 1 pm at Fairview United Church, Dutch Village Road, and the Reverend Heather Fraser officiating. Reception to follow in the church hall, with the burial in Fairview Cemetery. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the Canadian Cancer Society.
