Born to the late Leslie and Lena Waye, Bonnie grew up in Sydney and was the oldest of ten children, a proud Cape Bretoner and a devoted big sister.
After moving to Halifax, she met Jack, they were married in 1963. In the early years, Bonnie and Jack enjoyed going to dances and socializing with friends. Later, they settled in the Fairview and Clayton Park area where they raised their daughters and hosted gatherings for friends and family. Bonnie loved to entertain; she also enjoyed cross-country skiing and music.
Bonnie was a loyal and loving wife, mother, grandmother, sister-in-law, aunt and cousin to her very large extended family. Cultivating lifelong friendships was Bonnie’s talent and gift. One of her most enduring and treasured relationships was with her Fairview Friends, a group of women that met through Guiding and continued.
Bonnie was actively involved in the Girl Guides of Canada, the Mother’s Union, and later the Red Hatters. She volunteered with the Heart and Stroke Foundation and the seniors’ lunch program with the United Church. She returned to work in the 1980’s, first for Sensormatic, then Irene Hill, and finally with Mappins. Her love of shopping fostered her skill in retail sales. After retiring, Bonnie enjoyed travelling; walking with Jack and frequent visits to Tim Horton’s to spend time with the ‘coffee crew’.
Throughout all these activities and workplaces, Bonnie developed friendships that lasted a lifetime. Bonnie both had good friends and was a good friend; she was extremely generous with her time, an excellent listener, and storyteller.
Bonnie is predeceased by her parents and her sister Joanne. She is survived by husband Jack; her daughters Tanya (Glen), Kimberly (Joel) and Amber (Chris); her grandchildren Nicholas, Megan, Holly, Nathan, Moreen and Clare; and her siblings Billy, Perry, Ross, Angus, Cathy, Lynn, Faye and George. She also leaves behind many nieces, nephews, and siblings-in-law in the Waye and Butler families.
Visitation will be held on Friday July 29 from 6:30-8:30pm and a memorial service will be at 10:00am on Saturday July 30, both in J.A. Snow Funeral Home, 339 Lacewood Drive.
In lieu of flowers, donations in Bonnie’s memory can be made to the Halifax Hospice (https://hospicehalifax.ca/). We are truly grateful for the compassionate care that they provided to Bonnie in her final days.
