Its with profound sadness we announce the passing of Carole Edyth Legere, (Corey) at the age of 83, surrounded by family at the Halifax Infirmary, palliative care unit. Mom can now rest pain free and in peace. She was born on September 22, 1940, in Temperance Vale New Brunswick to the late Fraser and Ruth (Jones) Corey.
Mom is finally over all the pain and suffering she endured for a lengthy period, which she handled stoically and bravely.
Moms primary mission in life, of which she lived right to the day of her passing, was, the care and well being of her family, grandchildren, and large extended family. As the baby boy, I can attest she absolutely fulfilled that mission.
She married Ronelle Legere and thus the adventure began. They had three children, Sherry, Shelly and saved the best for last, Pierre (baby boy). In the early years, the family resided in Saint John NB, London ON and finally landed in Halifax, Dad’s hometown. Halifax became the final home for Ronny and Mom. They traveled to many of the Caribbean islands early in their marriage, drawn to the ocean, realizing their dream of an oceanfront property, with the purchase of the Beach House in St. Margarets Bay.
The Beach House became a mecca for family and friends seeking beautiful surroundings and Mom’s fantastic hosting abilities. The Beach House will remain part of our family going forward, and we know, there are many more great times and memories to be made there in the future. Scrabble will prevail!
In 1982, following their entrepreneurial spirit, Dad and Mom brought the first Rust Check business to Atlantic Canada. Through adversity and extreme hard work, they turned this business into one of the highest volume dealers in the organization and held that title until they sold the business in 1994.
In 1994 they moved to Krown Rust Control systems and took on a distributorship role as well as having the flagship shop in Halifax. This was truly a family business with Pierre, sister Shelly, and grandkids, Justin and Campbell, being employed in the business at various times.
Mom had a sign on her office door which said, “Do you want to talk to the man in-charge, or the woman who knows what’s going on?” And that sign, summed her role up to a T. She was the strength and back bone of the business bar none. Her need to account for every penny in a bank reconciliation, or to scrutinize expense reports with a fine-tooth comb, made the business a roaring success.
Dad passed away April 27th, 1999, after a 10-year battle with cancer. Alongside Mom, Pierre had the task of leading and directing the business into a new dimension.
It was during this period that Mom evolved and really became the person we’ve all come to know and love. She had a forensic memory for customer names and endeavored to provide the best customer care in our industry. She succeeded with top marks.
On June 30, 2023, we accepted an offer to sell the Krown business and property.
Moms Parkinson’s and dementia and their effects were becoming much more prevalent, and we did our best to assist and help mom through the various stages of these diseases. She was receiving 24-hour home care after June 30, but we soon determined that the level of care she was receiving wasn’t appropriate for her needs.
A private nursing home was found close to the city and the decision was made to move mom. The level of care was very good, and all her needs were met. But she was no longer in control and that played on her. She never really accepted the move to a private nursing home. She would have been most happy to pass away in her chair at the office.
Mid April, mom broke her hip, she underwent surgery to replace of which was a success. Unfortunately, she re-broke the new hip and given her base line condition prior to the potential second operation, and coupled with dementia/Parkinson’s, didn’t leave much hope of a positive recovery. With support and agreement of all family members, the decision was made to keep her comfortable and forgo the second operation.
Her loss will reverberate for a long time to come. Mom’s wish, would be for all to move forward, cease the tears and rejoice in our countless fond memories. This is now our mission.
She is survived by children Sherry Musnicki (Ted) Florida, Shelly and son, Justin, and Pierre and daughter, Campbell in Halifax; siblings Joyce Trimarchi (late Saul), Gregory (Loreene), Kristy Craig (Brian) Nancy Eldridge (Big Steve) Lisa Pollock (Shane) and sister-in-law Maxine Corey. Dad is survived by Kathy Newman (Gene). Kathy and Family have most helpful and supportive during this challenging time. Mom was predeceased by parents, Fraser T. (1994) and Ruth (1998) and siblings Donald (2013) Wayne (2015) and late wife Marilyn (2021) and Anita (2023).
Visitation will be held September 20th, 2024, from 4-6pm at Snows Funeral Home, Lacewood Drive, Clayton Park.
