Derrill was born and raised in Lunenburg, later moving to Halifax to attend the Nova Scotia Technical College pursuing a degree in civil engineering. After graduation, he proudly served the Province of Nova Scotia as a civil engineer; working with the Department of Environment, contributing quietly but meaningfully to the infrastructure and well-being of the communities he loved.
Beyond his professional accomplishments, Derrill was a devoted family man. He was married to his wife Donalda; Together they built a warm and joyful life, raising two children and later welcoming four grandchildren who were his greatest pride.
Derrill was known for his quick wit, generous heart, and the ease with which he made lasting friendships. His presence was felt in every room, bringing comfort, laughter and engaging conversation to his family and strangers alike.
Second only to Lunenburg, Derrill found peace and pride at the family cottage in Cape George—a place that held his heart and where many cherished memories were made.
Derrill is predeceased by his parents; Everette and Dorothea (Burgoyne) Hynick; and brother Donovan.
Derrill is survived by his loving wife Donalda; his children Amy (Scott Allen) and Jeffrey (Jennifer); grandchildren Alicia, Nicholas, Samantha, and Jack; and sister Roberta. He also leaves behind extended family and cherished friends who will miss him dearly.
