With great sadness we announce that Donald Arab died peacefully on August 17, 2025, in Halifax, Nova Scotia.
Born May 12,1934, Donald lived a full and rich life, deeply rooted in Halifax. He grew up and lived at 1258 Church Street until he was 88. He met his wife Dorothy when she moved into the house as a boarder to be close to her new job as a nurse at the Halifax Infirmary. They fell in love and married in 1961. Their shared values of faith, family and community were evident to all who walked into their home, a place filled with love and joy, where all who entered were welcomed, some staying to share laughter over a home-made meal while others stayed longer, as part of the extended family.
Don attended St. Mary’s boys’ school and St. Pat’s High School before graduating from St. Mary’s University with a Bachelor of Commerce in 1961. He obtained an Education degree from Dalhousie University in 1977. Don dedicated over 30 years of his professional life to the Department of Education, retiring in 1994.
At Saint Mary’s Cathedral Basilica, Don served in many capacities, including more than 20 years as a member and President of the Parish Council. He received the Archdiocesan Medal of Merit recognizing his service to the church. A special moment in his faith was shaking hands with Pope John Paul II during the Apostolic visit in 1984.
He loved to celebrate life with his family and friends, whether that was sharing a meal, a game of cards, a round of golf, or traveling. Don had many close friendships over the years, but none was more important than his childhood friend, Pat McManus.
He is predeceased by his beloved wife of 63 years, Dorothy Marie Arab (nee MacDonald); his parents Rezeallah and Theresa; siblings Josephine, Thomas, Sara, Mary, Theresa and John.
Donald will be lovingly remembered by his children: Maureen (Randy), Michael (Christene), Monica (Rodney), and Mary. He leaves behind a legacy of love through his grandchildren Erin, Liam, Hannah, Benjamin, Maxwell, Sarah, Cory, and Taya, and nieces and nephews.
The family extends deepest gratitude to caregivers Chisom, Brenda, and Karen for kindness and compassion during Donald's illness, as well as Colleen Paschal and Dr. Cathy Kells for friendship and guidance.
Cremation has taken place. A funeral mass will be celebrated on Wednesday, August 27th at 10:00 a.m. at Saint Mary’s Cathedral Basilica, 5221 Spring Garden Road, Halifax. Reception to follow at the church hall. Per Don’s wishes, there will be no visitation. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the Alzheimer’s Society (alzheimer.ca) or Chalice (chalice.ca).
