Doug was born August 26, 1927 in Halifax Nova Scotia. Doug was a proud firefighter and Lieutenant at the Halifax Fire Department for 30 years. The highlight of Doug’s week was when his great grand daughter, Taijah Rose, would come to visit every weekend. Doug was an avid card player, and he loved teaching Taijah how to play a game of crib with him. Doug was known for his jovial spirit and sense of humour, always ready to tell a joke or share a story from his past. Doug loved spending time with his grandchildren Tamara and Thomas, telling them stories and jokes and sharing in laughter. They all brought so much love and laughter into his life.
Doug was predeceased by his parents Margaret and Totten Coolen, loving wife Rosetta Coolen (Peterson), children Yvonne Llewellyn (John), Harold Beazley (Stacey), James “Jimmy” Beazley (Glenda). Doug is survived by brother Kenneth (Darlene), sister Corinne (Gary), sons Darrell Coolen (Lisa), and Derrick Coolen (Helen) and daughters Cheryl and Karen, and many grandchildren, great-grand children, nieces and nephews.
We would like to thank the Shelburne paramedics, firefighters, and lovely VON nurses who took wonderful care of Doug, who he also loved telling jokes to before they had to leave.
Donations can go to the Heart and Stroke foundation of Nova Scotia or the local fire department of your choice. There will be a small service held for Doug at a later date, after which he will be laid to rest with family before him at Gate of Heaven cemetery.
