LEVERMAN, Douglas Baldwin, 85, Halifax, died peacefully in the Victoria General on December 21, 2012, surrounded by his loving family. Born in Medford, Massachusetts, he was the son of the late Fred and Mary (Baldwin) Leverman. He attended the Halifax Academy, Queen Elizabeth High School and Dalhousie University before beginning his professional career.
In 1945, he began his sales career, spending 10 years at the Robert Simpson Eastern Co. He stared his own company in 1955, Western Furniture and Appliances, opening the first store in the Dartmouth Shopping Centre. He went on to have 5 stores in the Metro area. When he retired from the furniture business, he went on to spend 10 satisfying years in commercial real estate.
Doug was active in the Downtown Business Assoc.; The Halifax Board of Trade, The City Club, and he served on the Advisory Council of the Bayers Lake Industrial Park Assoc. He was also active on several boards over the years including the N.S. Voyageurs and The Saraguay Club.
Doug had a real zest for life and enjoyed many hobbies – his garden was the envy of all his neighbours and after he retired he enjoyed reading everything he could get his hands on. He also loved playing cards with his poker buddies. But his greatest passions – from his earliest days – were hunting and fishing. He hunted with his brothers, sons and nephews at the old farmhouse in Cape Breton and fished at Burnt Lake with his friends and his boys.
He is survived by his wife of 63 years, Barbara (Crowell); sons William, Douglas (Cecile), Andrew (Caroline); beloved grandchildren Myles and Jack Leverman, Brother David (Carol), sisters Lois (Frank) White, Alice Leverman (Bob St. Laurent), sister-in-law Elise Leverman. He was predeceased by his brother Fred.
Doug had a wide circle of friends and will be sadly missed by all that knew him.
Visitation Sunday, December 30, 2012 from 2:30 – 6:00 pm at the Saraguay Club.
