AVIS DE DÉCÈS
Douglas Thomas Tobin
16 mars 1941 – 20 mai 2020
Douglas Thomas Tobin died suddenly on May 19, 2020 in the QEII Hospital in Halifax with his wife, his best friend, at his side.
Born in Halifax in 1941, Doug was the son of the late Thomas N. and Madeline (nee Markley) Tobin. He is survived by his beloved wife of 59 years, Theresa Marie (nee MacAvoy); his son Thomas and wife Wendy of Ottawa; his daughter Jennifer Mary of Halifax; his son William and husband Eric of Los Angeles; granddaughters Megan and Lauren of Ottawa; and special cousin Dorothy MacDonald of Halifax.
Doug was devoted to his family and enjoyed great success in his personal and professional lives.
A life-long Roman Catholic, Doug was educated in Halifax at St. Thomas Aquinas School, St. Patrick’s High School, and St. Mary’s University from which he graduated with a B.Comm. A former member of the Royal Canadian Air Force, he qualified as a Chartered Accountant in N.S.
Doug practiced public accounting in Montreal and Halifax before working for Revenue Canada and the Government of N.S. where he advanced to the level of Deputy Minister. At one time he worked with Archbishop James Hayes to organize the finances of the Archdiocese. Late in his career he spent several years as a consultant to the Government of the Bahamas and performed consulting work in Ottawa.
Over the years, Doug served on numerous boards and committees both charitable and business orientated including Children’s Aid Society of Nova Scotia, Sisters of Service, Halifax Metro Centre, Atlantic Lottery Corporation, Saint Mary’s Alumni Association, and C.J.E.I.
Doug had a keen interest in the military and in history, and loved music, wine, cigars, and Christmas. A life-long supporter of the Montreal Canadiens, for many years the highlight of his weekend was playing hockey with friends in the Saturday Hockey Group at SMU.
Although not initially drawn to it, Doug converted a delivery van to a camper and the family enjoyed many camping trips over the years, in one case camping all the way across Canada and back through the USA. After the family camping years came to an end, Doug and Theresa enjoyed travel to further fields such as Japan, Russia, most of Europe, the Yukon, and the Caribbean.
Most of all, Doug loved his family and they loved him right back. That includes the big MacAvoy clan that welcomed him when he married Theresa. He cherished the times he spent with his granddaughters and all the laughter, which was very special to him. Doug lives on in our hearts, and in our laughter.
Funeral arrangements are by the JA Snow Funeral Home. Because of current pandemic restrictions, arrangements are delayed and will be announced at a later date.

Theresa and family,
I am so sorry to hear of Doug's passing. I spent many years working with Doug at the Dept. of Finance. For a time, we had adjoining offices and saw each other daily. I always held Doug in high regard not only for his intelligence but his willingness to assist everyone who came to him looking for answers on finance and money matters. Doug was an honest, caring person. I was always amazed at the sports trivia stats he could rattle off the top of his head. I know he was also into ancestry and during my last phone conversation with him I think we decided that we were distant cousins too.
I know how much you will all miss Doug as he was a family man first and foremost and he loved you all so much. He was very proud of his children and their accomplishments and of course, there was no woman like his brilliantTheresa.
My deepest sympathies go to you in this difficult time. I hope to meet with you when covid 19 permits us to gather to celebrate Doug's life properly. Noella

Theresa, Tom, Jennifer & Bill:
I was so very saddened when Wendy called to tell me of Doug’s sudden passing. Although we hadn’t seen each other in recent years I will always remember Doug as a kind and gentle man who loved his family dearly; and we all know how devoted he was to to Meg and Lauren.
Wishing you peace, comfort and strength through these difficult days and look forward to the day we can gather to pay tribute to a life well lived.
Sending love and hugs,

I was very saddened to learn this morning of Doug's passing. We were contemporaries who started in Grade One at St. Thomas Aquinas and continued our education together through St. Pat's and St. Mary's. Doug had a quiet dignity and I always found it a pleasure when our paths crossed throughout our lives I found stories from his varied careers and travels of great interest, and was so pleased when we worked together on the Commonwealth Judicial Education Institute. My deepest condolences to Theresa, Doug's daughter, sons, grandchildren, and all family and friends, colleagues, and the many whose lives he touched.

To you and your family I want to express my sympathy on the loss of your dad. It must be particularly tough during this time without being able to readily gather and find support from your family and friends. I think about the nice home your parents put together for you on Arlington and I hope it won't be long for you to get through the grief and to look back at those fond memories and stories about your dad. I am thinking about you all as you go through this.
