

Coolen, Edward Arthur, Lt-Col (Ret) of Halifax passed away on March 17, 2014. Born in Halifax, he was the son of the late E. Arthur and Jane (Little John) Coolen. He graduated from St. Mary’s College and in early 1940 joined the Canadian Artillery. He went overseas in 1941 and served in England, Italy and North West Europe. Following graduation from the British Army Staff College, he returned to Canada in 1946 and continued to serve in senior regimental and staff appointments until his retirement in 1968. On joining the Trade Commissioners Service, Department of Trade and Commerce, he took appointment in Ottawa, Brussels, Belgium and Dayton, Ohio, before returning to Halifax as Director General when he continued to serve until his retirement in 1983.
Surviving are his two sons, James (Margaret), Ottawa, Paul (Stephanie), Halifax; dear granddaughters, Elizabeth and Jennifer, Ottawa and Claire, Halifax. He was predeceased by his loving wife of 43 years, Didds (MacDonald); grandchild, Sara Margaret; brother, Wilfred and sister, Agatha (Geth).

Arrangements have been entrusted to J. A. Snow Funeral Home, 339 Lacewood Drive, Halifax (455-0531). Private family burial followed by funeral mass on Friday, March 21, 2014, at 10:00 am in the Canadian Martyrs. Burial in Gate of Heaven Cemetery. Memorial donations may be made to the Canadian Cancer Society or charity of your choice.
