

The many friends of Mary Alice Elizabeth “Betty” Albanito will be saddened to learn of her death in Parkstone Enhanced Living in Halifax on November 11, 2015. Born in Halifax on June 7, 1924, she was the only daughter of the late Frederick George Rout and Marion Jean (Anderson) Rout and grand-daughter of the late Richard and Mary Anderson, well known longtime residents of south end Halifax.
Betty attended St. Thomas Aquinas School and was a member of that parish when growing up. She was a graduate of both St. Patrick’s Girls High School and their Business School. Her Catholic faith was important to her. In 1960, she moved to the United States where she was first employed as a legal secretary before joining Eastern Air Lines in Miami, Florida from where she retired and returned to Halifax to live.
Surviving her are three loving children, Rev. Gregory H. Carruthers, SJ, Toronto; Virginia A. Carruthers, Alexandria, Virginia, US; Gordon, E. Carruthers, Halifax; and one grandson, Damian Paul Kroha, Portland, Oregon, US. Also surviving is a brother, George (Faye) Rout, St. Catherines, ON; one sister-in-law, several nieces and nephews.
Betty was predeceased by her two husbands, Harold Carruthers, and Frederick Albanito; also a brother, John.
At Betty’s request, there will be no visitation. Mass of Christian Burial will take place on Tuesday, November 17, at 10:00 am in Canadian Martyrs Church, 5900 Inglis Street, celebrated by her son, Father Greg Carruthers, SJ. Cremation will follow. Burial in Gate of Heaven Cemetery, Lower Sackville, NS in care of J.A. Snow Funeral Home.
