Born December 23, 1926, in Summerside PEI, Kay was the daughter of the late Dr. Harry and Kathleen (Hinton) Allen. She spent her early years in Summerside and was a proud Islander her entire life. After graduating from Mount Allison University, Kay worked as a secretary in various locations, eventually coming to Halifax. She met her future husband, James (Jim) Oakley, at Brightwood Golf Club. They married and settled in Dartmouth, raising their family, enjoying friends and various activities. Kay was a member of Grace United Church in Dartmouth before she and Jim moved to Halifax and attended St. Andrew’s United Church.
She will be remembered for her love of family, Sunday night dinners and summers at the cottage on Grand Lake. Kay and Jim travelled extensively throughout their married life and spent many happy winters in Florida.
Kay leaves behind her two daughters, Jane (Sandy) Cameron and Lynn (John) Loder, as well as grandchildren Jeff (Jill) Cameron, Sarah Cameron (Trevor Marshall), Megan Cameron, Stephanie Loder (Alex Whyte), Amanda Loder (Kevin Carmona-Murphy), Jonathan Loder (Catherine MacDonald), great grandchildren Briella Whyte and Brady Cameron, as well as one niece and five nephews. She was predeceased by her husband Jim, brother Dr. Lloyd Allen and sister Dorothy Profitt.
The family would like to thank those who cared for Kay, including Dr. Margaret Leighton, Dr. Valerie Lewis and Dr. Harold Berghuis. We would also like to thank the staff at Parkland at the Gardens for their friendship and support. Our utmost gratitude is extended to the ladies from Comfort Keepers Halifax for the kindness and compassion they provided to our entire family and especially to our mother.
The family will celebrate Kay’s life privately. Donations in her memory can be made to a charity of choice.
