It is with great sadness that we announce the passing of Fernando Moreira Rego, aged 88, a loving husband, beloved father and cherished grandfather on Monday, May 1st, 2017, at the QEII. He was born in Porto, Portugal on December 23rd, 1928, to Francisco Rego and Deolinda Frutuosa, one of 11 children.
From an early age, he dreamed of exploring the world and was drawn to the sea. He began his career as a Sea Captain and his travels took him to many parts of the world including South Africa, China, Australia, Denmark, Holland, France, England and Canada. Fernando met his wife on one of his travels to Cape Verde in 1970 and finally arrived in St. John's, Newfoundland in 1975. Within 3 months, he was employed by National Sea Products in Lunenburg, Nova Scotia and did many stints as a Captain on research vessels, fishing vessels and tugboats, to name a few.
He made many friends over his lifetime and enriched those around him, always eager to share a story of adventure, or two. Known for his keen sense of humour, he also shared a strong work ethic, was always ambitious and a jack of all trades. Not only could he cook a great dinner, he could build you a shed afterwards. He was generous, kind, and always wanting to provide the best for his family. Although stubborn at times, he was loving and caring none the less.
He was the proprietor of many businesses over the years, including Westfall Landomart in Dartmouth, Nova Scotia, Atlantic Seafood in Cole Harbour, Nova Scotia, FM Fisheries in Herring Cove, Nova Scotia, as well as a Convenience Store in Margate, Florida.
Fernando is survived by his wife, Feliciana Gomes; daughter, Mary Rego (Damian Fyffe); son, Dennis Rego (Julie Kuipery); and his granddaughter, Eva Felicity Rego. He leaves behind fond memories and will be forever remembered, terribly missed and always in our hearts. His was truly, a life well-lived.
Funeral Service will be held on Friday, May 5th, at 1pm at J.A. Snow Funeral Home, 339 Lacewood Dr., Halifax with burial to follow at St. John's Cemetery, Halifax. In lieu of flowers, donations can be made in Fernando's memory to the Alzheimer's Society of Canada.
